Adelaide. The city was built around owning a cage so everything takes forever to get to and even caging is slow because of population growth.

Its not the nearest shop but its the nearest one that has any actual selection. The shops around me only have womans and old people clothes. The bus trip is so long because I have to go to the city and then back out to the place I wanted to go to. Might just bus it to the city instead next time.

Well, yes, that makes more sense unless there's a specific shop you like in the other centre. Luckily I live a 15 minute walk to a major shopping centre, but it has its own train station + a bunch of bus lines.

that said disgusting weather aside I quite like getting around by bike here. Provided you don't live way down south or up north nothing is really too far and the city limits are reasonably flat

Aussie boxing day sales are shit anyway, prices are jacked up for the sales so they're not even worth fighting the crowds.

Doesn't help that nobody thought it would be a good idea to not run any extra bus services on one of the busiest days of the year, or to decide to build all of our shopping centres as far away from trains as possible.

This is honestly the worst part about all of it.
In Brisbane there's at least bus routes that go to Aspley Hypermarket and Chermside Shopping Centre.
And what about Chadstone in Melbourne? I've never caught a bus there, have you?
Why is there no tram or train station at Chadstone? Does shopping centre management across the country seriously think that losing out on a couple of parking spots is so bad they'd rather not have good public transport connections? Not everyone is always buying a sofa, christmas BSO, etc. that needs carrying in a car/ute.
There are some places that do it right, mostly shopping centres built around after a train station:
Box Hill (Melbourne)
Fortitude Valley (Brisbane)
Can anyone point to an example in Sydney since I've never lived there?

Why was your first thought not to go to the CBD on public transport? Go for what's most easily accessible, and everything revolves around the CBD. If you have to catch a bus to the CBD then back out, why would you do that instead of going to the CBD?

pic related: Tram stop near Highpoint Shopping centre (still from Schony747's video of route 82), which looks like an absolute disgrace.

watergardens and southland both have their own train stations + a bunch of bus lines, and they're smaller centres. It depends on who is developing the centre and how important they view public transport. Highpoint could use a station as parking is abysmal, I think metro 3 plans have a station there.

Are you bringing your own bike or not? Only Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth have government-run docked bikes. Canberra seems to have a private operator. I can't advise Brisbane due to the hilly terrain and humidity, though they do have a nice riverside bike/pedestrian (seperated) path. Melbourne is the general advice.

As for getting out of the cities: If you wanted to try MTB, then you can probably do so in one of our national parks or places like Nail Can Hill Reserve in Albury.

Real intercity travel can be a bit nasty with a lot of country roads having no real shoulder, so you have to be willing to ride the road in 60-80 km/h zones. On the other hand, there are a number of rail trails around like the High Country Rail Trail from Wodonga to Tallangatta and Cudgewa.
