I bought this bike a few days ago, I'm still trying to figure out which stem and saddle height works best for me, hence the uncut steerer, I think I might have gone too low, not sure yet. I want to change the tires, 19c feels too damn narrow, should I try 25c? I need to rewrap the handlebar ASAP also.

Fenders, I would consider. A cracker with replaceable chainrings as well, but there is no urgency

This. Put all your spacers under the stem and work down one at a time. Mine is at the top. Took me forever to work out. The slammed stem is a terrible meme. Yes there are rules for fitted bikes and pro riders. When you get offered an insane good deal on a bike thats toptube is tad too long and your arms are a tad too short you do what you can to make it work.

Fuck the bicycle fit police. I rotate my bars up on purpose just trigger those control freak assholes

Maybe it's the picture, but that setup looks like it's ideally designed to make it as likely as possible that you'll be pitched over the handlebars if you even think about touching your brakes, or just riding down a bumpy slope.

My new commuter, the last one got beat up after I left it outside....

I still need to put fenders and tilt the saddle right.

That's qtp2t arthoe tier stuff my man, you did good. Reflector removal, chrome fenders, and dyno with classic teardrop lantern would make that a 10/10. As it is a 9.95/10 is the best I can do.

I'm curious on what the hell you carry in that thing. I imagine you want to keep a significant load, or riding position over the back wheel, to prevent an over the bars on a hard stop.

19" Giant Iguana, 26" wheels, picture resistant tires, paid $130 for this $550 bike.

I am a concrete jungle light commuter, but mostly I ride for exercise, cause I weight 240 when I started, 200 lbs now, & just waiting to get some winter gear so I can get back out there again.

It's an all aluminum frame, but the tires are rather heavy, & I put them on after my 3rd flat, because walking 2-8 Mike's blows hard!

Anyway, I know someone is gonna say wrong bike, but I've had over 60 bikes in the last 3 years....

Trek 7200 (One of my Fav.)
And so many more....

It's the bike I like the most for the city, the Trek 7200 was awesome too, but I like this one best, & it has 27 gears.

26inch wheels are redicilously cheap , you should be able to score something pretty nice for ~50 $
than slap some okay hardpack tires on ( something like the continental racekings 2.2).
you shouldn't be getting flats and the ride will be way nicer.

Thanks, I was actually considering changing the crank set, wheels, & tires, because the rear rim is bent a bit.

An update....this bike is going to Franken town. Looking at the photo makes me a little wistful but I'm having a shop put a threadless steerer on it so I can gain more height. Drop bars may not survive the transition either in favor of a back swept flat bar. After riding a white knuckle rocky descent on drops it just wasnt working.

The new fork is a crappy origin8 mtb fork. If everything works out I'll get a surly troll fork for tourin'

It's a 16.5" frame and I agree its kind of a long shot to get the fit right. I'm 5'6" though. Really it's because the top tube is ridiculously long on these old mtb frames that dropped bars haven't been working, the hoods are simply too far for me.

if i was you, i'd just get some bars that sweep back and up and call it a day. pic related are pretty cheap. Keep it as a beater but accept it's never going to fit you well enough to be good for touring or putting money like a new fork into.

ultimately, get something with geo that suits you more. don't put all your hopes and dreams on this. it's not like similar but different bikes aren't cheap and plentiful.

new fork also just says to me 'crashed bike' and devalues it and kinda spoils the charm.

I agree and I'm aware. It's a bit of a gamble, if it works out I get a touring bike for cheap. If not, oh well.

I had the choice of getting more height through a new fork or a new handlebar, something like what you posted. The new bars would cost more since I'd have to ditch the shifters and brakes, so I chose to go with the fork first. We'll see how it goes.

You're not running a cheap Chinese full carbon saddle though, and you didn't specify if that's with pedals. That weight only seems plausible if they didn't stick you with wire bead OEM tires.

The bottle alone is going to add 0.8kg.

Just got this Peugeot Competition 5000 for free from my girlfriends uncle. It has Shimano RSX levers, and Shimano Exage 300EX shifters.
- He bought it in 1998 and drove it for around 300km, and its been standing in a warm garage since.

Its in really good condition, except for needing new cables, tyres and maybe some bartape. What tyres would you guys go for? Anyone have expericence with some good retro tyres, preferably with a white tyre sidewall.

Fashion mostly. Originally in the 19th century step through frames were made for women to ride with skirts. The idea that mens bikes have horizontal top tubes while womens bikes have sloping top tubes is just some bullshit that stuck. It's really nonsense since it became standard for women to wear trousers.

There are advantages in certain scenarios to be able to mount the bike without having to throw your leg high above it, but the real reason is mostly just gendered aesthetics, and I'm glad it's going away.

Trek Checkpoint Alr4. The ride was smooth. My first bike packing trip, total of 800km. Wasn't really planning on going the last 500km in one day but it was the ride back home so I just kept going.

Most fun was stopping by shops for food and talk about the trip.
Most sad part was the summer vacation traffic. At one point I was in a constant traffic with cars going 100km/h beside me for 4 hour straight. My ears and my head was numb and I needed a long break after that.

Thinking of doing it again this summer thought.

Thank you! I don't know my average speed but I did pass one slow moving truck that were going about 30km/h.
I also removed half of my bags on the home trip because I was loading up about 25kg of stuff + water. (I thought I were going to be cooking food so I had cooking supplies with me)

My girlfriend will be joining me next year, which will be freaking interesting because the solitary time while doing 800km alone was awful... and also great. It was weird.

It worked well this summer. It kept 2x Anker banks charged and my phone while on GPS at full charge as long as I wasn't riding in the woods.
It was actually using fast charging on my phone which was pretty interesting.

I would like to go Dyno hub but I don't know how to install it and I live far away from any shop. My only transportation is my bike.

Also while watching the Trans AM I noticed a lot of people having really bad issues with their dyno hubs so I figured a solar panel in summer would be a nice thing to try out.

The navigation feature doesnt ruin the fun imo. It helped me get out of the woods a few times and it also helped me find stores while on the road.

When I set off in the morning on my first ride I was just blindly following the navigation and it screwed me over because I went too deep into the woods and was out of food and water for 3 hours.
This teached me to zoom out on the navigation more and look for alternative routes when it wanted me to go on a wood path or long lonely roads.

I'd say, keep the navigation but think of it like a map instead of just letting it do the riding for you.

To be honest, i've looked into this and it's a lot less drag than you think because you can keep an aero position with it (which I did 95% of the time).
It even follows your movement when you are standing up and pedal like crazy because it's loose and "sway" with the bike.

You are right, they are designed to keep you going as fast as possible.

I bought one because I see it like a racecar. It's not something you buy to go at top speeds but you buy it for what it can do if you get there.

A road bike is really good at handling speed even if youre only going 70km/h downhill and have to take a scary turn, better be on a road bike (or something close to it) than an old steel city bike.

She bought him a cutesy bike bag, it's just a trendy bag if he had a retro cruiser or dutch style city bike.

As I said before that hang style bag is supposed to be slid forward and be attached near the front of the top tube.

If anon is getting fish-slapped do this:

- that bag tag is probably folded over. Take some fishing line and run it inside the tag then tie the fishing line up and around the head tube then secure with a steady knot. The bag should now be useable with minimal slap.

Part of having a MTB or beater is jerry rigging shit and rigging it so it doesn't brush or slap or pester you while you ride.

I think all bikes can be a good bike given the proper use and proper care.
Double sus is smooth as fuck to ride on the city.

Uh, no they haven't.

Besides tucking your shoulders in you can't physically get narrower at the shoulders, torso, and hips.

Wiggins, Froome, Thomas--they're all still riding 5-8 inch drops on XS frames.

Because it's what i currently own, it once belonged to my father-in-laws wife's dad and i got it when my old bike got stolen. It had a broke saddle, bent wheel, and broken gears so i put on a new wheel, saddle and made it single speed and now it serves me well.

Although i am on the lookout for something like pic related and slap on splashguards, a carrier a sideback and a saddle for my son to ride in.
