Japan is still developing it's maglev Shinkansen, I think to go in service next year and South Korea is expanding its HSR network further.
China just built huge amounts of HSR for "National Unity", which means that large parts of it are vastly unprofitable and wont ever be profitable. I'll praise China for building HSR in the public interest, but I'm still skeptical of them for various reasons. Still, China would be a neat country to visit as a tourist, though admittedly, Hainan just seems like the most attractive destination, personally.
