What are some good 42-622 or 47-622 tyres

Hey guys,

I just bought these 47-622 Marathon Plus badboys before the summer ended because I wanted to try out the biggest tyres I could put on my Checkpoint.

Sad part is that these tyres are hard as fuck to ride on... even with low pressure I can feel every little gravel I run over.

What are some great alternatives which also have good puncture protection? Or should I just go to 42-622?

Puncture protection and supple ride are pretty much opposite poles, can't have it both ways. I understand Marathon Supremes aren't as harsh, but I've never tried them myself.

Gravel Kings are good from what I hear or I have wtb riddlers in 45mm on my checkpoint that I like a lot.

I would only get marathons if i was going on an around the world tour or commuting, where I’d want durability, and then flat protection. Unless you’re doing that kind of riding maybe just get something more comfortable.

Depends where you live but most gravel roads don’t have much debris to give you flats anyway though and if you’re like me and go on recreational rides, I’m not gonna put 40,000km on marathons just cruising around so might as well go with something comfier

This. The first time I fell for the Grant/Sheldy fat tire meme, most of the fat tires weren't supple at all. They were urban commuter tires. They only helped for big bumps, but felt worse for road buzz than a supple racing slick.

Thanks guys,

I bought this bike to replace my Car in transportation but ive also had it for bikepacking through summer. The 35mm tyres that came with the bike only lasted about 2 months and the 28mm 4000II I put on got puncture after puncture so I just gave up and bought the biggest and most protected tyres on the market. Mistake.

I'll look into WTB riddlers, ive had an eye on them before. Gravelkings arent avaible in my country sadly.

I'd agree that these tyres are more for people who commute to work and dont want them to fail while doing so (Ignoring how they feel). I like going fast on nice roads but I also like going through wood paths if its possible and ive noticed that a lot of "gravel" tyres fail with the grip on regular roads, I dont know how much of that is true though.

I'm using Challenge Gravel Grinder Race 700x42 tires on a Niner RLT. They have very flexible sidewalls but still have an inner flat protection strip.
They are a big improvement in comfort and less weight than my previous tires, the Panaracer Fire Cross 700x45.

That's not normal man. I've been through 6 sets of those tires and very very rarely get punctures until they're quite worn down.

You should do 2 things.
>keep your tires lined up the same every time, so you can easily trace the puncture on the tube to the spot on the tire. Always work out what caused a puncture & remove it from the tire, or otherwise address it.
>use the technique where you go around moving the tire bead to the center of the rim when you mount tires and that way you won't rely on tools so much and will get less flats from poor installation.

I agree with this anon that the conti 4000's should not have punctured that much. You were probably pinching or had a shitty innertube.

The part about mounting the tire at the brand name so you know where on the tube the puncture is located is basic but very sound advice.

Personally if I were you I'd run a much narrower tire, like 28 or 30 instead of going so fat unless you live where there is a LOT of snow.

G-Ones came with the bike, I even have another pair just sitting in my closet, but since the first ones only lasted 2-3 months I dont feel like putting them on.
They are good, i put over 1000km on my first pair but the back tyre was really worn out by that time.

I kept getting tiny sharp stones through the tyre.. Wasnt pinchflats.

The 28mm was the best tyres so far, maybe I should try out the gatorskins? I really liked the 4000 II's.

Marathon Plus FUCKING TRASH for VERY HARDCORE bike tours when you're crossing 3rd world countries and your life depends on your tire not going flat

What you should have gotten is MARATHON SUPREMES. they are good damn amazing, roll like 300tpi tires, never get flats, relatively light, SUPPLE. Supremes are A COMPLETELY different tire. Schwalbe needs to stop confusing people putting completely different tires under their touring line

G-One comes in an insane array of confusing versions, some are trash, some are fast and supple. The only consistent thing about the G-One love is that they dissolve while you're riding them

these guys are both right. this tire really is the #1 best option for touring and commuting.

if you want a little more traction, marathon mondials are a little slower and heavier but grip more and wear longer. if you want cheaper, marathon greenguard are 80% as good for 50% of the price.

for some reason, marathon supremes are like dead dogs. the blue stuff just sucks.

if Continental has better availability in your area, sport contact ii (faster) and top contact ii (better protection) are acceptable.

bicycle rolling resistance website is a good source of information.

You should consider tubeless tires, if they aren't tubeless already. Allows you to run lower pressures for more comfy ride while the sealant will plug most punctures that occur. And you could always carry a spare tube in case the sealant fails. The wtb Resolute 42mm tires are great in my experience, good for most conditions and rolls well on pavement too.

you probably don't want this if you're not running tubeless, it's heavier and doesn't really offer benefits if you're not going tubeless.
v-guard onestar is the one you want, I'd say
hd speedguard is the old version? not sure.

Unfortunately they don't. All the new G+ graphene tyres from Vittoria are worse than the models preceding them. So you have to rely on NOS for Voyager Hyper and buy lots of spare since i doubt we will see anything as good from any manufacturer at this price point for years. This story is a lot like Schwalbe and the old unsurpassed Marathon XR.

I'm a retrodouche but I refuse to believe that tire technology is going backwards. If your favourite tires aren't available any longer, there are going to be better ones on the market. Tires are constantly improving and have done so for a century.

It's not that the technology is going backwards. The manufacturers made those choice for cost and marketing reasons. The Marathon XR was probably the tyre with the most possible milleage ever made. That meant lower sales. So it gave way to Marathon mondial which last hardly half as long. Th Vittoria voyager hyper were expensive to make niche tyres with a 120 TPI enveloppe where the competition usually offers cheaper to make 30 to 60 TPI. It made no sense to maintain production. You can still find high milleage and 120 TPI tyres nowadays, just not at those price points.

From what I can see there are a huge array of great tires to choose from now which shit all over everything in the past.

Although I do feel you and I miss my favorite tires too, you can't get digital blue pro 4 service course or green open paves any more. But the tire autist life is ultimately looking bright for us.
