Does /n/ pay to ride in any of those charity rides they hold nearly every sunday in the suburbs? I like to ride with groups but it seems a little steep to pay $50. The t-shirt isn't even good. I've been crashing them and riding without paying. Am I a lowlife?

There's about 3 weekly, but I want to ride in the giant peloton. The bike shop guys are fine but they are all late 40s and not really guys I'd hang with off a bike.

I usually ride in the Tour of Kansas City every year but those are 100% worth the entrance fee and US Cycling documents because you get an actual number and a time when you are done.

A dumb asian wiped out last year and died on a barrier so I don't know if they are going to be able to have it this year.

There's only one such ride I will do, and that's because all the proceeds go to a local organization that funds and supports local parks and trails. It's a group I'm happy to support whether or not there's a ride because doing so directly benefits me as a cyclist, the fun big group event is just a bonus.

I heard about that, it sounded like it had more to do with the barrier setup than the crashes that are obviously going to happen in a crit. He sounded like a good racer and a good guy, but I would be surprised if USAC did anything more than just stick their thumb up their butt to address barrier safety.

When I got my first road bike I used to do 'Century' recreational riding events, but frankly after doing a few of those they became just boring repetition that I'm paying to do. If I want to ride 100 miles or more in a day I can plan out any number of routes on my own and ride them for free.

The last one like that I did was a few years ago, "Foxy's Fall Century" out of Davis, which was a kind of 'coming full circle' thing for me, since that was the first one I'd done years ago. I went with a few teammates and we completed it in a little over 5 hours. No plans to pay for anything like that ever again though, as previously stated I can ride 100+ miles in a day anytime I want and pay nothing.

If you're not using their resources then you're not a 'lowlife', it's all public roads. Just be self-supporting and it's all good.

If it's in another city, especially once where it can be used as an excuse to see family, sure. It's not like $50 is a lot. For a local ride, only if they close off streets or I'm going with people I know.

I also crashed a few before but yeah, that's lowlife tier since it takes a lot of planning/funding to set those rides up, at least give them the respect to ride alongeside other donors or participants. You're right though, those shirts are shirt, even the nicer stretchy ones are shit compared to commercial sportswear

I'm not a fan of the "Grand-Fondo-ing" of road biking.

1) it encourages the idea of road cycling as a special event - not a normal everyday thing

2) local governments like getting money for event permits, so again this adds to the notion that cycling across a bridge or motorway isn't allowed unless some special permit has been obtained

3) the Fondu events are fake races where people pay up to several hundred dollars for bragging rights about how many people they passed and have little medals to show their office mates. fer christ sake, spend the $30? and do a cat5 race with your local club - where the other people rding ARE racing you

4. the stupid-high price of these events is turning cycling into Golf - with pricey memberships and crazy expensive equipment as barriers to entry - road cycling shouldnt cost so much - save your money for good food

Not everyone wants to race and end up in a cat 5 pile up. As someone who lives in the city, it's hard to get a good century route without going far away to the city limits or beyond. I'll just pay the $50 for the route and some safety. One day you'll get a job and won't be able to ride 300 miles a week.

lots of people don't like riding alone
I've lead "beginner" rides for MTB and Touring bike clubs.
Lots of advanced riders show up, I guess they can't organize their own rides.
Makes it frustrating for the real beginners. I usually have to lead from behind, because having a sympathetic "sweep" is what keeps the new people coming back.

Also, it really doesn't take megabuck logistics to organize food stops. The only thing our local club rides can't offer is a sag vehicle or repair stands at every stop.

They close off a lot of streets which makes riding in the city tolerable and not pretend you're like you're starring in premium rush. Everything is expensive in NYC too.

Riding an event lets you ride with safety in numbers, but also at your own pace. The only time I can use a club ride as a measuring stick is a big climb where everyone waits at the top.
