Virginia Museum of Transportation is in trouble (sort of).

There is a proposal to move the Campbell Court Bus Station to the parking lot directly in front of the Museum. They probably don't want homeless gathering outside the museum and scaring away visitors, or something.

Where the Hell are the people that visit the museum going to park if there's no parking? If there isn't convenient parking, visitation will plummet. Guaranteed.

There were many speakers from the public that opposed the location (100% of them in fact), but all of the city council approved it.

Government officials that completely ignore their people need to be tarred and feathered.

Such meetings are almost never a good sample of a population, as they naturally tend to be attract and be attended by focused interest groups, and it's much, much easier to draw a crowd of NIMBYs who only want to defend the status quo, than it is to get people interested in advocating for change.

from the looks of things there isn't exactly a shortage of parking near the museum, so why is moving a bus stop such a big deal?

wouldn't it be easier for people to visit the museum if there's a public transit stop right outside?

Maybe the musuem (a transportation museum even more so) should stop only catering to car owners, and try to attract more local visitors. Advertise on the busses, give people arriving by bus a discount, include the bus ticket in the admission price, open a cafe for people who are just passing by.

The irony of a transportation museum not wanting a modern transportation center built next to it is not lost on me, but the fact is that average bus riders, especially those that have no access to a car, have no interest in things like transportation or history museums, unless there is a heavily-emphasized social injustice component to it. Meanwhile, people that are interested in these types of places, especially those that are visiting from far away, use cars to get to it, and they neither need nor want to ride the bus.

If you think about it, perhaps the museum really should start to focus on social components more, because transportation plays a huge role for social mobility too, as evidenced by this whole discussion. There IS a justice angle to railroading, public transport and its history. That would be a new and unique angle, and surely attract some new visitors.

Also, if people drive dozens of miles to come see the museum, they surely won't be put off from having to walk three minutes more from their car to the entrance.

I've visited the museum at a peak hour on a weekend during the summer. That lot wasn't even half full. Now put into consideration a special even or something and soon people will be scrambling to find parking many blocks away.

Perhaps if they were also considering building a multilevel garage to make up for the lost spaces, or even a heritage streetcar loop (or free museum bus if you're gay) that could connect to the museum and other parking areas downtown.

Those are expensive options but are within the realm of creative possibilities.

They don't; the lease the track from the freight railroads that own them (in this case, Norfolk Southern). Any private train that wants to run on track leased by Amtrak needs their permission to do it. iirc, the museum previously negotiated directly with NS to do main line stuff, but recently they said that they have to go through Amtrak now.

That was pretty much it. Basically, no one with power cares about the welfare of the museum. I would suggest that they move to a more rural/suburban community where the local government would be more enthusiastic about a museum with full-size working steam trains, but they recently acquired a 2.5-mile route within the Roanoke city limits for future excursions.

The overall reasoning is that the current bus station a few blocks away attracts lots of crime (it does), and when all of that human activity comes to the new station, all of the crime will come with it. That, and it will be occupying a large parking lot that the museum has used for special events.

Honestly, though, I think there is a big unspoken reason for why the museum is doesn't want the bus station across the station and it's a very BASED reason...
