It's interesting because, per my spreadsheet from another thread, the average gauge of the 419 lines on it is 1,026.92 m/40.43 in, which is about one inch away from 1,000 m gauge. It's especially interesting because there are no 1,000 m-gauge lines on the list.

Meter is the minimal sufficient gauge. Anything less is left wanting. 900mm may just about fit intermodal containers, that's the absolute minimum, 750mm is too narrow for modern world general carriers.

In certain countries (looking at you, Russia) they went fullretard and took "metre gauge" to mean space between the inside of the rails, not between rail centres like normal. The difference between the normal Russian and broad Finnish gauges is exactly because of this

You better be trolling. Measuring track gauge from the inside of the rails is universal practice.

Also, the difference between five feet and 1520 mm/Russian gauge is 4 mm, and the Russians changed it from 1524 to 1520 in Soviet times to make it more metric friendly. It is not because they used to measure from the middle of the rails.

Agram is the old German/Austrian name for Zagreb. There was also a railcar operating on that same narrow gauge track. The different types were made from aluminium and named DEV I-III (Diesel-elektromotorni aluminijski vlak), starting with DEV I 1959.

Well, the few remaining trains are rotting somewhere since 1978. Most were cut in pieces and recycled. Pic related is the predecessor train operating on that same line before these modern aluminum DMUs came in use.

The last block is closed to regular traffic, but beyond that there's a significant section of street running in Dietikon. This part will soon be double tracked however, as part of the Limmattalbahn interurban tram project. It will share tracks with said new tram for about one block. It won't really share stations, the tram will stop next to the Dietikon terminus on its own tracks.

They were in most of the Warsaw Pact countries, they were even as far afield as Cuba and China.

I've mostly heard of them from the Cold War years and they were operated by teens and youths while supervised by adults.

Humppila museum railway got a new station building.

Old one was this little waiting room from Matku station, on Turku-Toijala line. It survived as a break room for the railway employees, its original build date and location is lost to history.

When Humppila-Forssa narrow gauge railway (750mm) operated, Humppila didn't have its own station, instead it shared the same building with the state railways. This was brought in as rail cargo to fill that role in 1994.

The building was long due for some decoration.

The Humppila new station building can be seen in the distance between the evergreen and pylon. The old wooden building was a little closer and on the same side of the line as the narrow gauge railway, hence why they could share a station building. Of course, for heritage operation this arrengement suits better.

Without knowing any better, probably for activating switches and crossing gates where normally it isn't an issue since trams are being used. Pacific Electric did a similar thing with EMD switchers and trolley poles near the end of electrification.

Cumbres and Toltec is the greatest train ride I've ever undertook. Being in the adults only observation car on the end is the cherry on top.

I got to ride the EBT in 2011 during their last operating season, though the steam locomotive broke down and they had to use a diesel. Of course everything is still in place, frozen in time though slowly decaying. It’s worth seeing and the Rockhill Furnace Trolley Museum is still running.
Agreed on Cumbres and Toltec. The Silverton is just as spectacular but the Cumbrrs and Toltec has so much more stuff preserved.

The EBT situation is strange. They’ve been owned by the same scrap company since 1956 but they just let it lie fallow while allowing people to operate a short section of the line. Some kind of beef with the operating group caused the standoff since 2011. I don’t think it will get scrapped tomorrow but it would be hard to reopen parts of the line up in the mountains where there’s collapsed tunnels and 60+ years of decay. Still, the Orbisonia roundhouse, shops and yard are preserved, 19th century narrow gauge frozen in time, comparable or even better than Chama on the Cumbres and Toltec.
Some wealthy boomer foamer needs to step up.
