>>1282950>How is HSR supposed to solve climate change when it will supplant only traffic between 100 to 300 miles distance for wealthy passengers for whom an hour or two shaved off regular rail traffic is worth paying double? On a scale from Gasthaus to heart attack grill, how american are you?
>HSR is supposed to solve climate changeit is not. It is amongst the things supposed to help solve it. Do you also believe in those single pills that are supposed to make you less fat?
>traffic between 100 to 300 milessure, at some point, it stops making sense, but 480 km is a low cutoff.
I.e. Munich-Berlin: about 500 km and now, with the new tracks (fucking finally!) that's 3:45h.
Compared to the plane which takes 4:10h (45 min to airport + 1.5h security bugger + 1:10h flight + 35 min airport to city center) you can easily imagine a few miles more where the train still makes sense, from a time standpoint.
>paying doubleICE for the above route: 145.5 €, IC+EC: 145.5 € (and DOUBLE the time needed!), Regional trains: 96€ (and about triple time…, but yeah, it is cheaper) and plane: 326€ (and a few coins for local transport)

>hurr durr, easyryanjetair gets me to Berlin for 9.99!!!!!Yes, they do, but not if you need to get there NOW! If you plan ahead, you can also get some train tickets for under 50€ (don't know how low you can get, but with some luck 20€ ought to be possible) and I'm totally willing to pay triple easily, for having more comfort and space in a train, as opposed to being manhandled by O'Leary's henchmen. And it's better for the environment to boot!
(Now we only need more fucking true HSR here. apart from some nice parade connections that make a nice case study to win an internet argument, there's still way too many connections where you simply can't use the train, if you actually have a shedule, or someone needs to pay your hours. But no, we still don't tax air-fuel and we still underinvest in railroad infrastructure)
