You should,if a road is narrow hugging the curb is dangerous if a road is wide there is no reason to not take the lane.Expect to get yelled at though.

I position myself according to the circumstances at the time.

Like for example, if the only way to ride is along a highway with no cycling infrastructure and with drivers who assault you and roll coal, then I position myself in another country.

When necessary.
- at several railway crossings where the 3rd lane briefly disappears because the city was to cheap to pay to have the signals moved when the road was widened
- at underpasses where the 3rd lane briefly disappears
- narrow roads with a square curb

If you don't take the space drivers WILL try to pass you in the same lane. There is one narrow spot near home where you can see that there is about 1.5 feet between the tire tracks and the curb yet people would still try passing unless I ride down the center.

There's some weird psychology at play here. From what I heard when talking to drivers after situations like this, they don't DECIDE to try to pass you when it's much too narrow.

The idea that staying behind you for a few seconds is an option doesn't even enter their minds at all. They MUST pass you INSTANTLY because you're on a bicycle and they're in a car.
