Can we talk about pedestrian transportation? I feel like its an often neglected form of transportation. Has anyone used skyways or the +15 system in Calgary? I'm curious their thoughts on how it has impacted streetlife.

We have escalators and elevators. Inclinators need some love.
Quite a few incline lift in stations of London too.

We have a pretty extensive skyway system here in Minneapolis-Saint Paul, each downtown has its own skyway. They don't really affect street life as it gets so cold here that the downtown streets would be deserted during winter anyway. The individual sections of the skyway are privately owned so they are mostly clean and safe, there is very little actual crime. The system is more like a second story mall across most buildings in the city, there are food courts and small shops along most of the way with a few central hubs like the IDS tower and the downtown Target. Getting in and out can get kind of confusing if you aren't familiar with your route, most entrances are through the lobbies of banks and office buildings which are required to be kept open the whole day. Coverage is pretty good and you can transfer to other transit systems pretty easily. The network is not being currently expanded, as far as I know, new construction doesn't accommodate the existing system as much as it could, though you can still get to wherever you need to pretty easily. The Minneapolis skyway is significantly larger than the Saint Paul one

The answer is that Calgary has no real streetlife and so the city government is not expanding the plus 15 network. They are pretty convenient in winter though, and the paths through the office buildings are usually lines with shops similiar to streets.

It's still there as far as I know, or it was up until last summer. The structure was for sale as a residential unit at one point too which would make for a very unique house

I caught the bus across the street for the last year. They removed it after 16 years of it being up. They did it as part of redeveloping the closed department store connected to the it into new uses

Parts of Hong Kong have pretty kino levels of pedestrian infrastructure

Just for starters there's the Central Elevated Walkway system in the CBD

Which connects to the Mid-Levels escalator system - longest of its kind in the world. 135m in height, 800m long.

Downhill in the morning and uphill at night. There's stairs for the other direction.

There was a moderately funny indie film that came out years ago about some office workers living in the +15 system called Way Downtown.
I lived in Calgary for ten years and really only every used them in the winter time. It was convenient to avoid the cold when going from the mall to the museum I guess.

I'm from Philadelphia and I didn't realize skyways were a thing.
We do have a dank underground tunnel system connecting subway stops that can get you about 8 blocks

I think it means the paths through the buildings aren't meant to be taken as literally the paths. Many skyway passages have twists and turns depending on the internal layout.

Japan has some pretty crazy underground pedestrian infrastructure. I recall the stuff under Shinjuku being particularly extensive and I once got lost for like an hour just trying to find my way out of a subterranean labyrinth of a train station/shopping mall/etc. hybrid thing in Osaka.
