>>1287740Here's the newsreel from 1970 talking about the opening of the Montjuic cable car
http://www.rtve.es/filmoteca/no-do/not-1435/1486607/I got to ride the old red open cabins as a wee lad before they were replaced with more modern ones some years ago.
And here's a newsreel item about the harbour aerial tram
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odG9KqIafCkThis one has actually quite some history, it was originally built in 1931, though it had been intended to open for the world's fair of 1929. It was meant as a public transport, since in those days the port was the main center of activity. At first it used four cabins, two on either side of the central tower, so you had to change cabins at the middle to do the whole journey.
It was damaged during the war and closed down, and later at one point a helicopter got entangled in the wires and crashed. It was finally reopened as a tourist attraction in 1963, using just two cabins. One cabin had been damaged in the war, and one other was transferred to the Montserrat aerial tram, which was built by the same company to similar specifications, also in the early 30s.
Today it still uses the original cabins from 1931, so it's really quite the museum piece.
