>The driver of loco. 35028 "Clan Line" was given a written reprimand following an incident on 20/08/12 in which he opened the cylinder cocks as he passed a railway photographer and his wife standing trackside, drenching them in high temperature steam. Though no physical inury was caused due to its quick dissipation the couple's clothes were dampened and the lens of the husband's camera required repair.

Yes
Cylinder drain cocks are opened to let condensated liquid water out of the cylinders, but are sometimes opened during running just for show.
Opening them directly lets steam out of the cylinders, decreasing compression

On closer inspection, my image is with the blow down valve open, not the drain cocks.
That is releasing water directly from the boiler.

This is missing Santa Fe 3751, Northfolk and Western 611, Nickel Plate Road 765, and some others.
Most are museum owned and operated on museum track and get to go places on "our tracks" on very special occasions.

The US phased out steam WAY earlier than most countries. They were almost completely gone by the 50s.

Also, there is one case in which they are superior to both diesel and electric: extreme cold. It fucks up the overhead wires for electric and in places like England, where the diesels are not generally equipped to be started below freezing or, even if started, the intake air is so cold they have engine control unit problems. This has led, to the massive glee of steam-nerds, a handful of incidents in which sundry commuter and long-haul passenger trains have been "rescued" by a steamer out for a winter heritage run or photo charter. Tornado did this in 2009, swooping in on 100 brits stranded in Kent. Eerily, because of the conditions, it was almost the only locomotive running in that region of England for nearly a day.

There are some that still operate daily scheduled services with paying passengers, though most of those passengers are tourists. I don't think any of them are standard gauge and none operate on the mainline, though, they're all self-contained narrow gauge railways. The Durango and Silverton is probably the most famous of them and it's one of the few, maybe the only, that actually provides a useful transportation function.
