How do you guys cycle?
I have an awful sense of direction, and the bike moves way too fast for me to navigate properly.
I literally have to keep stopping and starting, it's really not a pleasant experience.

I don't drive for the same reason, even though I have a licence.

1. Look on map for couple minutes
2. Note where is the north, where is the south, note some places (intersections, shops etc.)
3. Orient yourself using angles
4. Profit.
In other words, you should know your heading, and follow it more-less, while feeling distance you traveled.

Do you have some kind of condition that makes it hard for you to see or orient yourself? Uncorrected visual impairment or something? Not asking to be a dick here, this is vital info if you wanna get advice.

I had a neighbor who has an absolute shit sense of direction. He once had to walk home from downtown because it was late at night and trams weren't running anymore. So what did he do? Instead of looking at a map and just going straight down the street that we lived on, he first went to the central station. That in itself is like a two kilometer detour. But then he walked to the university (a place he was familiar with) which is further away from both downtown and the central station than our house. And not only that, he had to walk right past the house to even get there, and then walk back the familiar way. I don't know what the fuck his problem was. Or is, I don't think it's gotten any better.

Anyway, you should
>cycle more slowly, especially if you are exploring the area on bike for the first time
>look at maps more often
>maybe even bring one on your trip
>use gps/google maps or whatever
>find a good excuse to get off your bike to look around so you won't feel awkward
>just look at a fucking map more often

I've never really been diagnosed with anything.
I just suck at navigating.
I got lost multiple times when I was younger and my parents had to call the police to find me.

My city is small enough I know every part of it fairly well. I also like look at a map before I leave mostly to just pick a destination and rough route. The actual route I take varies, I make opportunistic turns based on traffic and whether I'm coming up to a red light or not.

Looking at a map is helpful for finding better routes in the city. Over the years my typically used roads has changed considerably. With a map you can see alternate roads that might be much less busy, short cuts through parks etc.

To make your life easier try to avoid left turns (or right turns in case of UK), or crossing busy streets without lights when planning a route. There is one busy street I have to cross that I found is easier to do if I first turn left down an alley then cut between a business and make a right to get to the left turn lane of the busy road, so I only have to worry about traffic in one direction at a time.

Purposely get lost while riding then find your way back with minimal maps/gps. Just keep exploring but always have a method of orientation, a compass, the sun + wrist watch, and local landmarks are good. Don't be afraid to get lost, use it to tap into having higher awareness for your surroundings.

I would say long story short, the more you practice your orientation the better you ll get, if you feel unconfortable with getting on and off you bike just do it by foot, but we are more or less the same and it is not that hard, just practice :)
