Doubt it could be made any shorter really, but maybe drive both wheels if were at it? I mean, the first rider would be steering and it could work off a system like in your "classic" FWD 'bent, whilst the back rider would just get to drive the back wheel. Would require two sets of gears (hub gears?).
Also, what about speed control and braking? With what was shown in vid, both cranks fixed together, it could work almost intuitively, one would feel when the other stopped/ started to pedal. Brakes operated from the steering bar (one person only) so much less of a problem.
