Helmet thread. Here's some tips for helmets.
>picking a helmet
Go to a store and try one on.
>best brand
Giro.
>cost vs safety
Cost of helmet generally does not affect safety, but rather affects weight and ventilation. They are tested to the same safety standards. However, I would still advise avoiding chink stuff. The only real safety difference between light/heavy helmets and small/big vents is that if your helmet has big vents, stuff can go through them. I personally got my head hit by a bunch of hail because I was wearing a road helmet with big vents, and I heard a story of a mountain biker than got his head impaled by a branch, I think it went through a vent in his helmet. He survived.
>safest design
Mountain helmets offer more coverage than other types of helmets so are obviously safer. Wear a full face downhill mtb helmet if you want to be really safe.
>bike helmet vs motorcycle helmet
Bike helmets are softer so they deform at lower impact energy. Therefore, at bicycle speeds, bicycle helmets offer MORE protection than motorcycle helmets. Whereas at motorcycle speeds, motorcycle helmets offer more protection.
>MIPS
MIPS is a feature of many modern helmets that reduces the risk of rotational injury. Can be identified by the yellow circular MIPS logo on the helmet and package.
