Is this an MCAS type of situation? Why would it suddenly start to dive!?

It's kind of eerie the professionalism of all the other pilots and ATC and how professional everyone is on the comm while this plane is basically doomed and crashing. What must have been going through all their minds?

It was a jackscrew failure caused by improper maintainence.

The flight was doomed by its own airline, not by the aircraft type.

Realistically, no.
Once the Horizontal Stabalizer was gone, the plane was too. The jackscrew is probably one of the most vital components on an aircraft, along with the wing components and so on. Even if you have total engine failure, you can still control the plane and fly it. But as soon as you have a total control surface failure, especially one like that of a jackscrew, then you're screwed.

The DHL 2003 shootdown in Baghdad was interesting, because in that case, the hydraulics failed, but the control surfaces remained in their neutral positions, meaning that there was controlability in differential thrust, but in the case of Alaska 261, if the Horizontal Stabilizer completely gives up, then you have basically no way to control your pitch and attitude.

The fabric used on the airlander and Zeppelin NT is incredibly strong. You can hang a car from a few inch strip of it. Unless a rocket is fired at it it wont do much

Pretty much. There's a particular twin-engined bomber I used to fly in WT (I know I know, but it was with a HOTAS and full real controls, none of the instructor mouse automatic bullshit), that had I would constantly lose elevator control on due to, I think, the cables being severed. I always tried to save it by turning and inverting with throttle+ailerons+flaps, but eventually I'd get to the point where I couldn't pull out at the trough of the sine wave.

perform proper maintenance on it, including regular checks using properly calibrated equipment
oh and don't fucking hit it with an armored truck

What about using duplicate jackscrews? One goes up the other goes down. If one fails then the other can perform an emergency landing.

These redundancy convos are too much. The threads on the nut that took out the Alaska Airlines plane were totally sheared off. That created a failure mode of the jackscrew that shouldn't exist.
