If it is then do we have any estimates on when will it fully occur?
Will the role of conductor be a thing of the past once GoA 4 is common?

Yes, since unlike planes they don't fly at 35 000 ft. Also trains don't have steering wheel.

Yes, it is inevitable but it will never occur fully 100% around the globe. There will still be manually operated heritage railways and emergency personell on freight trains as long as trains still exist.
In my country, the main thing holding back automation is relatively strong conductors' unions and a general unwillingness to invest in rail infrastructure. Nürnberg has had a fully automated small-ish metro for a few years now, which is awesome. There are a few single experimental automated operations here and there, but nothing else on a larger scale. So I'm guessing it will take at least 20 more years before automatic trains become an everyday phenomenon here.

Yes. I'm surprised that it's not the case already, planes are baisically completely automated already, they only have people onboard to fix shit if it goes wrong because planes fall and kill everyone without input. Train left without input can just brake to a halt and be safe in most cases. Plus it only has one degree of freedom and much less opportunities to lose input.

Relative benefits of UTO diminishes along capacity. Heavy rail can still be DTO. Attending to passengers is valuable.

I mean, in basically every European state, self-service checkouts are a thing in basically every supermarket. Yet, the unions in Germany keep banning them from being used there.....

You need to bear in mind that Germany is obsessed with cash, especially when you don't spend that much money. During rush hour, self-check out won't be that faster than standing in line anyway and human interaction at the cash is very low to begin with. So it really boils down to "cash or card", and most people prefer cash. Self check-out is usually only worth it in larger stores, and German stores are usually tiny places scattered across the city. So you will never see a self-check out.

Maybe not on the road where they confuse big white trucks for open sky, but certainly on railway tracks where there's all kinds of security measures already in place to help that.

"Automation of trains" has been state of the art for decades.

Half-automation is everywhere. ETCS is capable of doing it.
You can even do it with LZB ("AFB"), which goes back more than half a century.
The driver becomes more of supervisor. He only has to press a button at each stop, and that's it for regular operation.
Sure, full-automation systems are rare, but they exist and are on the rise.

That's really the only reason at this point (for railways) beyond the required facilities not having been deployed everywhere.
