They have very few advantages over a real tram, but there are some benefits:
>1 rail in stead of 2-gives them a very small turning radius
-makes it slightly cheaper to construct a new line
>rubber tires-makes them handle pretty steep hills
-makes them accelerate faster than you'll see a conventional rail vehicle ever do
On the other hand, there are a lot of cons...:
>rubber tires-more road friction which means high energy consumption, this undoes the benefit of cheap construction because they are more expensive than a tram on the long run
-bumpy ride, feels more like a bus, not even near tram quality
-because the vehicle is fixed to a rail, the rubber wheels always go the exact same path, causing horrible damage to the road in no time
>because translohr is a proprietairy product, you can't ever buy vehicles or rails from another manufacturer than translohr tm>tram-train and other through operation with existing rail lines is obviously impossibleAll in all, it's safe to say they're a hype that will be short-lived, and it's likely that all will be replaced by trams and electric buses within 50 years from now. They are pretty cool though, so let's by all means enjoy the fact that they exist in our period of time:
