>>1304948>even signed up for an organized 100 mile ride but it was raining and I wasn't in the mood; stopped and turned around after 10 miles of riding in the rain.Story time!
About 20 years ago I started riding bikes again. Had a shitty $350 Giant Boulder MTB. Didn't know shit compared to what I know now.
I'd ride with friends, we were all weak and slow, but one of us was an 'avid' cyclist, had a nice road bike, and would Sherpa us around his area (Santa Cruz mountains area).
Eventually I got an actual road bike, and tried things like Century rides. I could do them, but they sucked for me, and it took *all day* because I was still weak and slow (and heavier).
Fast-forward to 3 years ago. Signed up for a local Century event I'd done those years before alone, but this time with 3 guys from my team. The goal: do the full 100 in under 6 hours, with stops to refill bottles. Was raining off and on the whole day (which is what you said that reminded me of this). No rain gear, no fenders, got splattered the whole time, my glasses were so smeared with muck I could barely see out of them. But I accomplished my goal: 100 miles in a little over 5 hours, including stops, rain not withstanding.
I'd come Full Circle; last time I'd done that, it was torture and took over 6 hours, but I'd progressed over the years to the point where I could do it in a little over 5 hours.
I don't bother with 'events' like that anymore. I can go ride 100 miles by myself for free anytime I want, but have no real need to anymore. I like training and racing more and would rather spend my time doing that. ;-)
Story over.
