The frequent weekend rides for charity during the summer don't get police protection. You officially aren't supposed to ride in a wide peloton or bomb through stop lights but people usually do it anyway.
Critical mass here is always last friday of the month and starts at a let location so it has morphed into less political protest and more social event for bike casuals.
Crit races they of course block off the streets but we only really have one of those a year in the week of the larger Tour of the city event.
Oh and because its so hot in the summer here the races/group rides always push off pre 8am on Sundays to minimize heat and traffic. They'll also spray paint the street with arrows and the race initials so people don't get lost.
