>>1307163Yup, the UK loading gauge is puny, and very narrow low down due to high platforms, precluding the use of cylinders larger than 21" in diameter. To get something that could pull 12+ coaches at express speeds needs more than two cylinders, or very high pressures.
High pressure boilers were expensive to maintain and very heavy, so were ruled out in favour of 3 or 4 cylinders, which also increased power without such a huge weight increase.
