On residential streets, I'm okay with riding on the road, as long as it's not one of the "main" roads through a residential area. Even then I keep right and my head is on a swivel. I never ride down the middle of the road, because state law says a bike needs to be as close to the right as possible. If it's a particularly narrow street, I'll hop up on the side walk and let them by.
Maybe you might think that's a hassle, or maybe where you live the law gives you the whole lane. Well, good for you. "The driver was at fault" will be a big comfort to your family when they are hosing your guts out of the axle of some teenage girl's car.
The mentality of "Fuck you, stupid cager! I'm on a bike and can do whatever I want!" Doesn't do anyone any good. It just gets people pissed and killed
