1. Lock up your bike for an extended period in an area known for bike thefts
2. Make your bike too hard to steal
Asshole thieves will just destroy it out of spite if it's too hard to steal; if they can't have it, they make sure nobody else can either.
Relying on any level of bike lock to protect your bike from theft will never protect it from being intentionally destroyed. Don't park your bike outdoors anywhere you can't keep it in line-of-sight or where it's not otherwise being monitored by someone trustworthy. Near where I live in Folsom CA there is a parking garage that has an enclosed locked area where you can park bikes for a small fee, and there's also bike lockers. More places should have these.
