The rifled barrel meant that it was not NATO compliant, and when the company which made the shells for long range bombardment (which used to give the Challenger II an effective range of 10km) went bankrupt, they had to quickly adapt the Leopard 2 smoothbore barrel into fitting into the Challenger II which reduced its effective range to only 2 km, in line with other NATO Main Battle Tanks. Then there's the engine, which is kinda dull, though every NATO tank other than the M1 Abrams has a standard diesel engine. It is just the Abrams which has a gas turbine (which can theoretically run on any fuel, NATO standard diesel, petrol, kerosene, Jet A-1, bunker fuel, etc.), but the Challenger II has nothing interesting.
The only thing the UK has really made that good in recent years has been television, and even that's been in pretty bad decline.
