The fun in collecting is the hunt for that missing piece in your set. Going to yard sales and auctions, asking around for basement finds, etc. Today you can just buy it online and every seller knows what's the value of what they have, so you just pay X amount for a finished collection.

Where's the point in that?

90s steel road bikes will become collectible. The last generation before they moved to aluminum and/or carbon.

I still have one of those Bianchis and wish it were still ridable, but the seat stays are shot to hell. Bike was a fucking rocketship. Now the frame sits on my wall as a decoration of long-faded glory.

I was too lazy to bust out a real camera, but from what I can tell, those two gashes are from fatigue, and the left one has a small pit up top. I guess I could put the frame into a rig to get some more detail with a medium-format camera, but a microscope would give me more info.

I'm thinking of getting the Specialissima CV that Bianchi released to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Patani's Giro/TdF double. $6k for a frameset is kind of bonkers tho.

I was thinking that it could be hairlines or microcracks that caused that, but maybe not. It doesn't really matter, though. The bike isn't going to be built back up, because compared to modern racing bikes it loses out on stiffness, stability, and weight. I would not trust it on a fast descent, that's for sure. It wins by a mile on aesthetics tho.

I've never had it on a rack that would abrade in that area. Not even sure what kind of rack would do that.
