While a bike is indeed pretty good in the city, it isn't suited for longer distances.
(yes, you can ride100+ miles on it and it is fun, but that isn't practical)
Bikes should replace private cars in cities, but for rural areas the car is still the best option. For inter-city transport trains are great, especial, when combined with bikes.
