What's your farthest ride?
How far do you ride per day/week/etc?

About 40 miles from Hartford to New Haven
I try to do at least 28mi/45km per week

My longest ride was 130ish miles I plan on doing a 250 mile ride this summer. I put in about 70-100 miles weekly, I pretty much bike everywhere.

My distance is highly variable depending on weather, which bike I'm using, and whether its a city, highway or gravel ride. I try to make each ride at least 1.75 hours regardless of weather. When its nice I like 3 hour+ rides. Then there are the weekend brevets riding all day.

400km in one day, took me 16 hours, pretty proud of myself. Had 15kg of luggage on the bike too.

Right now I'm having a winter break but next week I'll start doing 100km / week minimum.

You're that bikepacker guy right? How do you fit 15kg in just bikepacking bags? I always find myself fitting a set of panniers because bikepacking bags are just plain too small by themselves.

Well, most of my gear is really compact. I fit my sleepingbag + pillow + sleeping pad + clothes, have my flipflops hanging on the sides and my Anker solarpannel strapped on it.

Framebag is tent sticks, food and repairs, rain jacket and gloves.

Frontbag is 2-man tent, a ground cover, casual clothes.

Otherbags, food mostly.

Waterbottles add up 3kg by default.

All in all it adds up pretty quick. I even had to buy a new tent because the cheap one I had weight too much.

I would LOVE to buy more premium gear and go below 10kg.

But how can I enjoy the special nights out with my wife if I'm sleeping alone? This whole tent only takes up half of my frontbag.

To be fair, I have thought of a hammock for when i'm riding solo but I have no experience with it.

It's also supposedly possible to sleep 2 up in some of the larger hammocks. However I doubt that claim a lot, at least if you and your wife aren't manlets.

I believe your size is the main reason you can go with just bikepacking bags. Since your frame+handlebar width are larger, your bags are also larger. I'm a manlet so i can't fit a frame bag without sacrificing a bottle cage. Panniers are the only solution or pehaps a carradice camper seatbag.

Actually i only take about 11kg while he said he takes 15kg. It's just that even lighter stuff don't have proportionally smaller volume than heavier stuff. I suppose i will just switch to those ultralight panniers with soft backplate mixed with bikepacking bags but that still nets you a small aero penalty compared to pure bikepacking bags only.

I feel you, my wife have the same issue with hers being in the smaller size. Then again, I've seen a lot of smaller size frames in the TransAM bike race that seem to manage. You just gotto pack what you actually need, comes with experience.

You do you though, bikepacking is fun and I really like the look of it but hell, sometimes it can get annoying going throught the bags. You really have to pack it in a special way.

This is a huge thing people don't consider before they try bikepacking. You really have to buy/bring stuff that fit the volume and not the size. If you just go biketouring with panniers you can stack things differently.

Pic related, I really tried to find a work-around for my damn sleeping-pad but I had to buy an air-pad instead.

I find that after 125 km i stop enjoying the scenery and just focus on finishing the ride, which is a waste. I've now moved on to a routine where i ride in the morning and early afternoon then stop in a city to spend the rest of the day doing touristy stuff. Obviously that can only really works in Europe where cities are fairly closely spaced and most have very different architecture and historical stuff to see. In America, the main attraction is the wildness while cities are samey so it's better to ride all day.

The ortlieb seatpost bag top bungies are pretty weak. If you had a better system like revelate's you can throw tons of stuff up there. I put my z-lite, tent poles, town shoes, bike lock, and sometimes extra food or clothes to dry on there. The revelate one is much sturdier, my buddy toured with the ortlieb one you have and near the end of our tour on some rough patch of road the ortlieb bounced so much it got sucked into his rear wheel and got all ripped up.

Yup, it's pretty weak, probably why you can buy extras. Its perfect place to put my solarpanel on atleast.

Love your setup thought, MTB bikepacking seem so much fun. Some day I'll grab a MTB for packing but so far my Checkpoint ALR have been good to me.

When I first started riding I'd fall asleep while watching tv after a ride. It eventually went away, but I'll get it again in the spring as my activity ramps back up. I think its a side effect of building new muscle.

Im 280 lbs and started cycling beginnibg of 2018. Rode 2500 miles on 2018 on pace for 3k.

Longest ride I did was a 100k race in mid july. Thought I was gonna bonk but didn't. Decided at last minute to do 100k instead of 35 miles. I had already ridden a bunch that werk it wasnt pretty but I did it.

Im going out for a 50 miler tomorrow (normal big ride for the week). Plan on doing the 100 miler in August this year put on by parks and rec.

Ive lost 40 lbs since I started and my legs are jacked. Im an old college fb player so it felt good to do another activity other than weights and cybex. Even at 280 jogging isnt a viable cardio option.
