We live in an industrialized society with inherent risks. Some can be mitigated, some can't be. I take steps to greatly reduce the risk I'm in an accident by using lights and riding in a safe, legal, and predictable manner. I've thought about it, and the marginal protection a helmet would offer me is not worth the inconvenience. If the unlikely happens, I'll accept the consequences, just like I would if I had a major skiing accident, a car accident, if I got struck and maimed walking, etc. I've used bicycles as my primary mode of transportation for the last ten years, since I was a teenager when I was forced to buy and use an old '80s ten speed because I could not afford the fuel for my parents' Jeep I was allowed to use. I've ridden double digit miles daily in California, Viriginia, and Idaho, with vastly different infrastructure, traffic patterns, and attitudes toward cycling. Riding without a helmet is not even close to the riskiest thing I choose to do. But by all means, continue to clutch your pearls while engaging in something that is probably far more risky.
