Hugo Eckener, the best airship captain in the world, wrote in a large manual how to fly an airship. Regarding storms and winds, he said; do not fight them, ride them.
The great Zeppelins would also, on purpose, skirt along side storms in the rain to recollect water for ballast, and to make use of wind for speed.
In that regard, airships share more similarities with sailing vessels then aeroplanes.
Modern airships could ride the weather even better, computers can calculate the perfect routes. They would never travel in a straight line, but ride the gusts and weather patterns, which they first did BY HAND. Computers could perfectionize it.
The real reason we don't have them today is because an irrational fear of hydrogen and not enough enthusiasm for these amazing aircraft.
