For the price of that bike you can get a very nice bike from a brand that isn't severely stigmatized as (a) dragging down cycling as a whole for decades, and (b) associated with fools who are nostalgic for a time when the US public was almost entirely ignorant of what a good bike is. Trek, Specialized, and Giant come to mind, and I don't have much love for the first two, and I have some qualms about the builds offered by the third. Any number of more "obscure" brands like BMC, Cervelo, Wilier, De Rosa, especially if you go for last year's model. Or if you're not concerned with image, build your own from Chinese carbon.
Even the virtual brands sold by Bikes Direct would be less embarrassing.
