Could they have been saved?

I know weve already agreed that what happened to pan-am was mostly out of their control, but what about TWA? Would it be possible for them to survive had things gone differently?

Flight 800 sunk them.

Its hard for zoomers to understand this but in the nineties, particularly the mid-nineties, not a lot happened. the only event of 1996 that I remember being more high profile than TWA flight 800 was Diana getting divorced from Charles. It dominated the news for weeks.

If it was something that happened today where people lose interest after a day or two and find something else they would've probably made it, but that disaster just destroyed what was left of their brand.

aside from the obvious of telling Carl Icahn to fuck right off, they were fucked over by keeping their older planes in service for way longer than they should have.

replace the L-1011s with A-330s and 767s as quickly as possible like they wanted too in the 80s. replace the 727s with 757s in the 80s instead of the 90s. replace the 747-100s with 747-400s as soon as they can in '86, possibly even becoming a launch customer. those -100s really outstayed their welcome, and the 747 was still a backbone of their fleet until they were forced to take them out of operation after TWA 800. if they got the -400 they likely wouldnt have gone anywhere for a long time. their service was pretty good even to the end, so thats not that much of an issue but still worth noting.

Understatement of the fucking century.

When Carl first took over TWA had a massive 20% marketshare. By the time he left they had only 10% and falling fast. This retard tanked a massive company like TWA in just a decade.

Further to this, by the time TWA800 happened, Teenie Weenie was essentially buying Jet-A for cash, on the spot market. They were unable to broker any sort of purchase agreement with any AvGas distributor/supplier. Jets were flown with reserves calculated to the nearest pound - less than a cup. They were financially choked into submission by Icahn. Uncle Carl had no remorse whatsoever for the dicking he gave TWA, saying "it's business."

No carrier is really safe if/when oil prices hike again, but I would bet on AA dieing first out of the majors. The whole airline is a bigger dumpster fire than United with the worst on-time performance and worst with regards to cancelled flights in the US. Meanwhile, Delta is the single best airline in the US by those metrics, beating out even Hawaiian.

I would be shocked if the real titans like Ryanair, Southwest, easyJet, Jetstar etc. go anywhere...but the shitty ones like Spirit, Frontier, Wizzair, Scoot are not long going to survive and Norwegian is just fucked. Just cannot turn a profit without premium cabins.

Delta does still have a lot of old 767s, 757s, and MD-88s/MD-90s, but they starting to renew their fleet and Delta leadership and frontline employees are honestly far better than can be found at AA. That does matter, otherwise Southwest for example wouldn't have done half as well as it has.

none of the big 3 are going anywhere, even in the event of such a crash. as it stands all of these airlines are strong enough to take a TWA-800 tier hit, TWA themselves however were just beginning a recovery from financial disaster.
