I'm not sure what all the bad blood was between Ed and the old crew, but it sounds like Ed thinks he's a know-it-all and got bitch slapped down under their tutelage numerous times and is keeping 3985 out of service in spite of them. Maybe he'll change his mind after he has fucked around on 4014 and realises how badass it would be to tie the two articulateds together to pull a 8500+ tonne road freight.
