"Leave on the line" is such a meme.
The only thing that needs to be done is proper pruning of trees and bushes next to railway lines. They used to be trimmed back in the days of steam locomotives as they were a fire hazzard, but after diesels and electrics became normal, people got lazy.

Properly maintained lines do not need to be closed for leaves. At most, during times in the Autumn, sandite trains and maintainence trains with jet washers should run on the track sections most at risk in order to make sure that no trains are ever put in danger by leaves. Sandite is already done in the winter to prevent issues with ice, and we already know how much salt is needed in winter for roads. Plus, leaves are also bad for cars too. Rotting leaves in the autum causes car incidents as well as car tyres cannot find grip on the mush of rotten leaves. There's no solution to clearing roads of leaves, other than having sweeping vehicles which move at 5 mph/10 km/h clear the roads every few days.

It's a pretty serious problem is some places, but there are solutions which mitigate and even eliminate the problem. Running non-revenue trains to clean the line is the most popular option and can be done during off-peak times when there is more capacity on the lines to fit such trains between revenue service trains, either freight or passenger.

Anon I was a railroad conductor, literally never had problems with them and never heard anyone mention leaves on the rail. We never ran special trains or had equipment to clear leaves from the track. It's a complete meme in the US.

Leaves on the line is an actual issue in Europe, and has become an actual meme in the UK, along with "the wrong kind of snow", that being, snow that's dry and powdery but only a few millimetres of it is around, so snow plows are ineffective. There's also "the wrong kind of ice", where 3rd rail and some signalling is taken out of action thanks to ice ingress and the "wrong kind of sunlight", where unusually warm summers cause rails to expand unexpectedly, resulting in the line buckling.

The UK loves to shit on trains and railway engineers when there's disruption caused by weather. France, Germany and other parts of Europe have similar engineering issues, but they never whinge so much in newspapers. Fuck the British tabloids.

Were those forrests coniferous? The issue, at least in Europe, and apparently in New York, is that deciduous trees, next to the line, even in urban areas (as trees are often used to hide a line from sight) will drop their leaves on the line in the Autumn (Fall) and this is where the problem starts. If the leaves are crushed by passing trains, they become harder to remove, sometimes needing a knife to scrape the stuff off. Once the leaves start rotting as well, it gets even worse, and in some instances, insects like to get onto the rails to eat the rotting vegetation, which also leads to other rail issues.

I suppose it's fine so long as it goes where you need it to go, but I've been on a train exactly *once* in my adult life -- and that was to go get a pickup truck I bought, which I then drove home.

I take trains quite often when I travel to the city, it's nice to arrive directly in the centre without having to mess around with driving through city traffic and finding parking. Also I don't have to find accommodation with parking, I can just stay wherever is most convenient to me to get around on foot or by public transport.

They are, the LIRR always has delays in the fall due to leaves. Every year. I can't speak to freight trains (what I assume you mean by big trains), but I took the LIRR daily and good god leaf delays were shit. Some were.probably fake and the LIRR covering its ass for other delays, but some were definitely real.

At the extreme, a bird could wreck havoc on the balloon. It’s like riding a motorcycle with NONE of the motorcycle fun, and WAY MORE danger than a motorcycle.
Why the fuck do these things exist and why would anyone set foot in one??
