The issue I have with GCN is that Emma is probably the only important person in the team when it comes from experience.
Most of them, exclude Simon, havent even been on rides longer than 5 hours. It feels so damn weird listening to people who talk about nutrition, bikes and how to do shit when they only ride for less than 5 hours.

I don't think anyone is/was expecting top gear tier production value but they could easily do different types of top gear style challenges and trips.

I only ever really enjoyed the adventure specials which were largely scripted anyway. The format was basically getting a couple chase vehicles and some security to follow them around an exotic location. It's not terribly different from what I'm seeing in a lot of GCN videos, unless you mean that you want a live studio audience or something.

Those are the best. Imagine GCN shows where the guys have a set budget and have to buy and outfit a bike for a specific challenge (multi-day ride in weird conditions). The budget could also include pocketmoney for the trip to make it more interesting so they could pick whether to budget for some shitty tent+clipless pedals VS hostel nights or whatever.
Or pre-made bikes and "first one to get to the other side of this forest/moor/desert wins"
Or a Wheeler Dealer type challenge where they have to buy, renovate and resell for a profit.
Or "here's a shitty grannybike, some scrapmetal and a welder. Now create a rickshaw or something and get both/all three of you to X which is 300 miles away."

Money. Top Gear had an effectively unlimited budget before the BBC started turning screws for political reasons, and TGT had a massive budget because Amazon wanted a halo program for Amazon Prime original series to prove that they were serious about becoming a Netflix competitor. The cycling industry doesn't have that sort of money to throw at a PR firm to produce Youtube programming. And I don't see a company like Netflix stepping up to produce something interesting, because I can't see it being very interesting to their target audience unless it's also a food porn show or some other crap.

They don't really show anything lower end non mainstream brand bikes, like china imports because their industry sponsors wouldn't like that.
All of their bikes are always super new and clean.
This draws a wrong picture for beginners, I think GCN is more for pro riders.

They did a whole series about upgrading a shitty old USPS-clone bike to something serviceable recently. Their spinoffs GCNTech and GMBN are a bit better but you might find the former boring and the latter more annoying.
If you REALLY want to see shilling check out Park Tool's channel. I can't think of any other brand account pulling a "how do you do fellow youtubers" as well as Park Tool.
But if you want department store bikes and other weirdness you know what manchild big box autist and 30-year-old taco midget to watch.

GMBN has nothing to do with road cycling so not really a comparison in this case. But yeah they are mostly focused on the new stuff, and there is a good reason why. The new stuff comes to mid level bikes in a couple of years. The amount of midlevel bike vids you can buy are limited anyways. Just find an article about bieks below 500 quid or 1000 quid etc.
