Let me regale you with the story of the rise and fall of the Brightline NIMBYs.
>Back when it was called All Aboard Florida, some soccer mom in Stuart reads about the proposal
>Naturally, she freaks the fuck out and riles up her neighborhood organization because what else do crotchety old retired people have to do?
>Found CARE: Citizens Against Rail Expansion (because of fucking course they call themselves 'care')
>Make a Facebook page and convince their country to waste millions of taxpayer dollars fighting this
This Facebook page was a gold-mine, by the way. There was one guy who would literally only comment "move them west" on literally every single post, another guy that would try to start shit with anyone who didn't live in their counties (even if you lived by the tracks in Miami, to him, your opinion was invalid), and a third guy who said he SOLD his dream home because it was by the tracks and he bought into all the fearmongering (and I actually believe him on this). Anyway:
>CARE loses court battle after court battle, BTFO by everyone but the politicians representing their counties
>Said politicans try to usurp regulation of railroads from the FRA
>Miami, Orlando, Tampa, and basically every place that's not some overpriced boomer mcmansion suburb kill all attempts
>NIMBYs continue to get more and more pissed because they're not used to having no power over this sort of thing
>Facebook comments get more and more insane
>CARE literally reduced to parroting comments of a random antisemitic black guy who's pissed because Brightline didn't give him a job (he I wonder why) on their Facebook page
>Brightline offers to settle
>One of the counties agrees
>this kills the CARE
>Approximately 80% of the NIMBYs call it quits
>Only people left are the crazies
>5 or 10 people REEEEEEEEEing about the train on the few pages left (floridanotallaboard) nonstop
They're so fucking pissed it's amazing. I wish I knew where my screenshots of their crazy conversations went.
