why are engines in airliners always mounted in pods instead of integrated into the fuselage? maintenance reasons aside.

Imagine titanium blade flying away from engine (30 000 rpm). Now, imagine having engine in fuselage doing the same thing. You would need hell of a firewall.

Yes it will take off because it's engines create thrust by pushing against the air, not the ground.

The mass of the engine helps with the bending moment of the wing box and wing roots which makes those components lighter. A podded engine is safer in case of a malfunction and fire.

It can take off if the control surfaces are set to generate lift in the backwards direction, as they would be for climbing steeply and the treadmill were able to accelerate quickly enough. The plane would have take off backwards, climbing until it stalls then recover from the stall before flying away.

As we do not know what acceleration the treadmill is capable of it's impoosible to answer.

The British did that in their early jet airliner designs, American manufacturers always put them in pods. I believe it had to do with ease of access for maintenance and an aerodynamic benefit to having them on pylons, in addition to added safety.

With pylons you can have high-bypass turbofans. If you don't care about fuel efficiency, noise, pollution, or vibrations, then you can use low-bypass or turbojets and blend them with the fuselage.
