Can we get a touring bike general thread?

I have a specialized road bike and looking for something a little more touring style. What does /n/ think is good? Also just post cool looking tourers.

I think for a tourer you've got to decide if you want a more modern setup, sti shifters, 2x subcompact gearing, 11speed, discs
which in many ways will be more fun and competent
With this the focus should be on getting the right low end gearing.

or
a classical tourer with bar-end or downtube shifters, 9 speed, a triple, and rim brakes like pic related.
which you can fix with yak butter, the parts will last longer, and are cheaper
And because the whole thing is cheaper you might be able to include for the same price, a dynamo system. Which is really something to try and get because they make a huge difference.

Get a surly long haul trucker

There is no better touring bike.

The only possible downside is that it is so amazing you will only want to ride it with a full load.

Find an old frame, buy it. Build it up from scratch. Make it your own. Put a disk fork on there, maybe some sti shifters, a dura ace rear, good drop bars with aero positions, front and back rack, full panniers, there are many ways of making a good lht.

But above all cherish it because it will last longer then any car you own

Fuji Jari is a good example of the former, sportier option
44/28T subcompact crank and 12-36t cassette is very sensible gearing, unlike many similiar bikes which just have road gears.

you can get a jari or a touring for under $1500 in Aus.

A new complete LHT or a Kona Sutra is going to be more like 2k

can someone explain why kickstands are bad on a touring bike? and don't say "it'll fall over", a kickstand doesn't prevent me from leaning my bike against something or laying it down if necessary. it just adds another option.

My touring bike.
2015 Devinci Tosca, actually an entry-level cyclocross frame but with a weird amount of rack mounting options and a triple chainring.
Amazing bomb-proof bike that has worked well as a roadie, singletrack and cross-canada touring bike.
Unfortunately they are no longer in production.

Sure about that, I've tried a carbon checkpoint before. I wasn't a fan of it. if I'm going to blow money on a touring bike it's going to be custom steel or titanium. Carbon fiber is good strictly for Fred sleds or racing bikes.

Hey OP and anons,
My wife bought me a 2019 Trek 520. It is set to go touring right out of the box (after assembly of course). Front and rear racks included, I've added fenders/mudguards.
Mechanical cable pull disc brakes, triple chainring on the front, steel frame, 700x38 tyres.
I use it as a commuter mostly but it serves well for weekend outings. I just like being able to cart a shit ton of stuff around with me.
Would recoomend/10.

Unless you're touring along the coast and there's deep sand on all the paths. Or you're touring through Europe and there's cobbled roads for miles. Or you're touring over mountains and need to go up long, steep climbs with a lot of weight on the bike. Or you're touring through the third world (like the midwest) and roads are shit.

I went through Eastern Europe on a road bike with 28c tires. I didn't have any flats. But I was ready to trade my bike in for a B'Twin with 40+c tires at the end. If the roads suck, narrow tires suck. And on tour, you can encounter a lot of shitty roads.

Well, I did manage 800km in 2 days (20 hours in the saddle per day) so I should manage one more day. Sure, most of the roads were pretty good, but when you get forced to ride on the shoulder with gravel and random crap on you wonder if you might need a little bit more protection and tire size, so far so good.

I weigh one hundred kilos and they haul my weight up in enough of a hurry. I used to ride dual suspension mountain bike with hydraulic discs and the mechanical don't perform like the hydraulic brakes did but that is to be expected. I'm due new brake pads soon and will try sintered instead of organic and see if that makes a difference. For what they are, mechanical discs work well.
I saw a comment about skinny tyres and yes, you could run a tourer with skinny tyres but 38 -45 mm tyres give a little extra cushioning and for bumping up kerbs and lumpy footpaths they work great. My Trek520 is stock as bro, can't fault it for what it is.

Suck it. 28c are thick enough for most people. My "back up, runs no matter what" surly ran 32c. And tbch it was a bit faster when I had the 28c wheel on it

Same reason why beginner thru hikers always pack way too much shit. They think they need stuff for every conceivable situation. Another issue is that lightweight shit is still expensive, although at least good sinylon stuff is coming down in price because of Dyneema overrunning the higher end.

Recently got a 1.4kg 2 person tent from an outlet. Still expensive, but not much more than a regular 3-4kg tent. I'd still use and have a good time with my old tent if I didn't get this new light weight one.

I don't really know what I'd need to bring to make sense out of a full touring bike loaded with panniers and bags. Maybe if i was going for longer town to town rides, and wanted to bring a few changes of clothes.
