You can go from LA to Boston for $10 if you're willing to leave at 3am, deal with 2-3 daylong layovers, and ride exclusively on deadheaded buses.

Greyhound has insane deals if you're willing to take them, they are fucking SHIT SHIT S-H-I-T but if you have to go cross country on $20 they can do that. This is their business model, catering to the lowest 1% of Americans that cannot afford a car or gas.

It's not the fun type of bus trip where everything works. The buses with the cheap tickets are all graveyard shift ones where the toilets don't work and no rest stops are made because the bus has to be in X city by 6am for the service crew to deal with it for it's 7am run. On top of that, half the trip you're not actually in the bus but in some hole in the wall town waiting for another bus. If you miss any of the buses, you don't get a replacement trip or a refund and you're often stuck in a place with no cell service.

This doesn't even touch upon Greyhound's spotty record with luggage security for their normal customers, let alone their late night customers.

In the UK they're kind of a superior to public buses, I know that in America they're kind of merged together and both considered buses but here they kind of serve as cross country and international.

Where do you find these insane deals? I don't see anything like that on their website.

That may be a little cheaper, but nowhere near as cheap as they were making it seem. I just checked LA to Boston as far in advance as they allow (May 2020) and it's still $168. In 3 days the same trip is $216. Obviously pretty far from $10 or $20.

Mostly they are competing for lazy customers who don’t want to drive themselves, cheap ass trucking companies hiring Over the road drivers, privaledge restricted junior enlisted military personnel, prison releases, and of course bum transit.

They rarely have any competition. The Texaplex Triangle (DFW-Houston-San Antonio) has companies like VonLane and Megabus competing with them, but they target different customers.

In my experience, if you're going some distance NX is generally about the same price as a rail ticket. The train's slightly faster, but going via coach you're guaranteed a seat, power & wifi and (crucially imo) you can take more baggage. All things being equal I'd prefer a train trip, but NX are better for groups or families

Plus, on the National Express, there's a jolly hostess selling crisps and tea. Bah bah-bahda, baaah, bah badah...

I was on a few the other day and wondering the same thing. The occupancy rates are extremely low, easily sub 20% and it was like $14, from Boston to Providence. It was also two hours late and was an outside stop in the cold.

I was on the 2nd last run from Kelowna to Vancouver. Driver was awesome. It'll surprise some, but most Greyhound Canada passengers were middle-aged and seniors. The poorfag thing is a meme spread by punks who still live with their parents because they can't afford to rent their own place AND drive at $6/gal (CAD). ;-)

Now some areas of BC have fewer transport options than they did in 1916.
