because it doesn't actually matter. cup and cone bearings also have to be adjusted properly; they're simply avoided in higher end bikes because freds are too incompetent to do anything without a proprietary $400 tool.

if you're mechanically incompetent you can always buy a Dogma F10. or better yet just go to an LBS that doesn't suck and save yourself about $9000

Well you don't technically need sealant if you run a thick enough sidewalled tire and a rim with a really tight bead seat. Bike tires will never seal as well as a 30lb car tire.

The reason carbon bikes got so affordable in the last 10 years is because of pressfit. Only now is there starting to be enough interest among freds in threaded BBs that manufacturers are willing to spend the extra to implement threaded BB in carbon. At present it's a niche option for extremely expensive bikes.

I really don't know why some people get so triggered over this. My original Trek had a threaded BB, and when Trek replaced the frameset with a different model, it had a PF BB, but the only reason I was annoyed about it was because I had to get different tools to deal with PF. Beyond that there's not much difference really. Also someone can just get >>1330101 if it bothers them that much and get the best of both worlds.

Literally the first result when I googled this:

Here's a fun fact for you, Anon: The drive side bearing in you BB will wear out faster, and you won't know it needs to be replaced unless you remove the crankset and turn the bearing with your fingers; if you feel any grinding at all then it's time to change it. Sorry if this ruins your day.
For what it's worth, BBRight was supposed to fix this. I have no information as to whether it actually does or not.

As previously stated the only thing that irked me about it was having to come up with different tools. In the end I only had that frameset for a short time and only replaced them once, and I ended up tapping them out with a drift pin and a hammer (basically destroying them), and using a huge fine-pitch-thread bolt, nut, and a bunch of flat washers to insert the replacement, which worked just fine.
Oh yeah I forgot the one other thing that annoyed me about pressfit: you can't remove them without destroying them, which means once they're in, that's it, you remove them, you *have* to have a new replacement on hand to install, whereas with threaded you can remove them and reinstall them no problem.

Well if you can get to the actual bearing itself you can pull the seal off and clean and repack the bearing with grease. You don't have to take out the bb to do this. Removing any bearing without the proper inner press pretty much drestoys it so that's not really a press fit issue. Bearings are relatively inexpensive so destroying the old one and pressing in a new one isn't a big deal.

You might get it to run a little smoother but *wear* is *wear* and that's all there is to it. BTW they're called 'sealed bearings' for a reason, the grease doesn't just vanish from them, and if they get water or something else in them to contaminate them then that *causes* wear which means the bearing as a whole is toast.

Campy and Shimano are pretty much the only ones still doing cup and cone bearings in their hubs. MTB hubs have been cartridge for ages. Cup and cone is pretty much dead and cartridge has replaced it. Just because you can still find retrogrouch gear and couple outliers with them doesn't represent the current state.

Seriously guys, I've started noticing some squeaking when pedalling and thought it might've been the chain, but it's not an old chain and I lube it good, but it keeps squeaking. It happens after a few kilometres, one or two squeaks every revolution (so it can't be a single tight chain link, like I had once, since it would require 3 or so revolutions).
Am I fucked?
The bike is old (2016) GT grade.

do you have some others to swap on and try?

you should also try shifting to your granny, then lifting the chain off the chainring and resting it on the bottom bracket shell.
Then just spin your crank around and see if it squeeks or isn't smooth
also try gripping a crank arm against the chainstay and see if it clicks

those would indicate you just need a new bottom bracket.

shimano is getting what they can out of their fancy machining equipment for cup and cone shit. if you want to repack bearings every 200 miles they can perform better than cartridge bearings, but the average cyclist doesn't care about or have the time to bust out cone wrenches every single weekend. sealed cartridge bearings have replaced free ball bearings in bottom brackets and headsets (that aren't shit) and they'll eventually do the same on hubs.

Cartridge is fine if you're a fred who rides bolt upright at all times, never rides in the wind, never turns, and never puts any real power into the drivetrain. The design is fundamentally unsuited to the dynamic loads put on a bicycle wheel day in and day out. One dimension only.

And if you're trying to fred out you're not even doing it right. Real freds ride Gokiso.

It just amazes me how average people with no technical background automatically assume that if there isn't some in-your-face change to something, that they just slapped a new model number on it and raised the price.
Do you really not understand that a change in an alloy, or a small part or sub-assembly, or a subtle change in the design of a component, can have a dramatic effect on the overall quality and function of a product?

Shimano advertised the C40/C60 clinchers as completely new and redesigned wheels with new dimensions. Then people started buying them and noticing that they measure exactly the same as the old C35/C50. As the threads started popping up on the internet Shimano quietly changed the specs to the same as the old specs. Every store had them listed with the wrong dimensions, the ones Shimano specs originally said, when they came out.

The C40/C60 are nothing more than a rebadged money grab when they realized developing a new rim would be too expensive and decided to take the C35/C50, rebadge them, and sell them to the good goys for more money. There are no subtle changes to the design, it's the exact same wheel.

Also taking into account Shimano's recent track record it's always better to assume incompetence and/or cost cutting to maximize profit that inevitably lead to shittier products.

Also don't forget the exploding trispokes, glued cranks, cable eating STIs, rusting brakes and di2 front mech servos, and the latest gen of mechanical FDs where the high limit screw also affects the lower limit. Their track record isn't hasn't been that impressive lately.

Because on the new Shimano front mechs the high "limit" isn't actually a limiter on how far the mech can go but it's used to adjust the position of the mech. There isn't an actual high limit anymore in the new Shimano FDs. It's a pretty nice idea and properly implemented would make adjusting the front mech much easier. However the design is so bad that the high screw can easily be engaged even when the mech is in low position and it won't go in far enough. I've seen a case where the cage had to be slightly modified to make it work.

Feels good, man. I need a special wrench to grip those threaded bearing cups, but it’s not a huge expense. The whole system seems fairly well engineered, can’t imagine it being much improved. Sacrifices some compatibility, gains some stiffness and lightness, about what I expect from Shimano.
