Any hobos/freighthoppers here? My friend used to tell me about his mind blowing adventures riding freight trains across the American west but I was always too chicken to go with him.

with good reason, train hoppers die in ways that are extremely horrible for those who find them.

no matter how long and drawn out a death train hopping trash gets (think bleeding out in a field after having a leg amputated), it's no retribution for the trauma the first responders will have to go through after finding a carcass that was dragged for miles under a container car.

This, I remember reading one where a hopper accidently locked himself inside a container with moving cargo that pulverized the crap out of his corpse. It doesn't even have to be being crushed to a pulp, you could dehydrate to death in an empty car if you manage to lock yourself inside one.

Realize the danger that follows this kind of adventure is the reason why it has a coolness factor to it

Hitch hiking probably has just much adventure, with far less chance of accidental death. Probably the same amount of danger of being raped or murdered

Old time hobos were maimed and killed all the time and I heard of people in my friend’s circle of freighthopper kids who lost limbs. Another danger is gangs of thieves who’ve been known to kill people. Railroad bulls and local cops are the least of your worries with no more skull cracking as in the past. A vagrancy bust or a GTFO of the yard or town warning maybe. My friend said the railroad workers usually didn’t give a crap and were sometimes even helpful.
