On the C-82 was because one engine out on take off it did not have enough power to climb out to enough high/time to meet new FAA regulations Post WW2.
Some guy noted that the navy was about to scrap these 1 generation fighter jets ( panthers) where the Navy had "played it safe" by insisting that the engines ran on gasoline rather than Jet fuel . Just in case these jet fad ended .
So he bought them up strapped them to the roof and got the FAA to lift the restriction on fields the C-82 could take off from .
1950 /60's was a fun and weird time C-123 .s had wing tip jets with a blinker doors that opened and closed like an eye ball.
