Any aircraft that flies and floats on water please.

I'll start with this guy, The Big Gulp is the world's largest seaplane and fights wildfires in California.

Why doesn't the USCG use modern seaplanes?

The JSDF uses current production turboprop seaplanes.

Right now they have the C-130 find you and drop a raft full of supplies. Then a helicopter or a ship has to come and rescue your ass.

Why not let seaplanes rescue you if the seas are clam enough?

exactly. You wouldn't have to use extra boats or helicopters to initiate a rescue operation. If the plane is designed to withstand a small amount of chop and rescue people that have fallen overboard, sinking vessels etc. It would save so much money and fuel for additional transport such as ships and equipment needed for other emergencies.

The convenience of being able to land on the water and take off is insurmountable.

I really don't understand why they aren't more common in passenger configs. New Zealand, Scotland, Great Lakes, Denmark Strait...not to mention island nation's...I see the fit.

Wouldn't take much to wash the exterior of the aircraft on land with fresh water before take off/landing. Hose it down and your good anon.

Most modern ships usually get into serious trouble when they encounter technical problems in combination with bad weather. No seaplane is going to be able to land in bad weather to evacuate the crew.
The only exception is a massive out of control fire in calm weather, but how often does that happen to warrant maintaining a seaplane for rescue operations?

I think in this case, they hit a floating log that was washed into the lake in an earlier thunderstorm. Not sure if that has anything to do with the design.
