Will hybrid and electric vehicles encourage more urban sprawl?

It'll be quieter to live next to all those highways, and consumers will have to spend less on fuel so they won't mind driving more.

Probably. Imagine living two hours from work with a self driving car. You could spend all of that traveling time doing office work, spreadsheets, business calls and make it to the office for a meeting. It will definitely spread cities out more for at least some portion of the population

The limiting factor on car ownership is road acreage. We've already hit carrying capacity, electric vehicles won't make any major difference. Only way to beat back the automobile menace is decrease the subsidies given over to cars/roads.

No.

At highway speeds even EV would be loud, plus motor will definitely whine at those speeds.

Electric car is not any different from normal car.

I read a study that shows people who live in More sprawled areas tend to drive more fuel-efficient cars. So I think it’s possible that if people are driving VERY fuel efficient cars many of them won’t mind driving more.

Counterpoint: if people are buying less and less fuel, we’ll need to start tolling the highways or there’ll be no way to pay for them.
And if highways are tolled people will be less likely to use them.

There's toll roads, but I'm thinking about taxing dc Level 3+ fast-charging specifically. Proposals out there taxing all public charging stations seem too far.

why would it? A current SUV gets 500+ miles on a tank of gas which is far more than an electric car.

the limiting factor is the amount of time people are willing to spend commuting.

Not really. The sound you mainly here isn't the engine, it's the sound of the rubber tires on the pavement. This is why driving at high speeds on concrete is exceptionally loud, compared to the same on fresh asphalt. Hybrid or electric, if you drive it fast, it will still make plenty of noise.

It's literally not. Tons of people who, for example, ride tech shuttles work on the bus and those count as work hours. So you might only spend 6 hours at the office and an hour each way working.

3/4 mile from my house on two sides are highways.

Yes when you're close you hear the tires, but I can hear the car engines at all hours of day and night, even a mile away. Americans really don't realize how noisy highways are.
