>>1341224In 2016 I was a leading a ride down an abandoned, paved road that cuts through some county-owned property. Just after a downhill stretch, there is this perpendicular trench cut in the road, kinda the opposite of a speed bump. It's 6" deep, a foot wide, and spans about 80% of the road. It's easy enough to ride around it though.
This was a public, no-drop ride that I helped organize, and I didn't know some of the faces, so I had corralled everyone at the top of the hill, solely to mention this obstacle, and that it could be easily avoided just by staying to the far left edge of the road. A couple of riders did not listen.
In particular, this one qt hipster girl hit that trench, and her front wheel got bucked into the air. And it just fucking fell out of the fork. Because her QR was juuust tight enough that the cam didn't rattle around. It's likely that she would have been able to recover otherwise, but instead she had full-frontal smash to the ground, with a little pileup of riders that had decided to follow her line. No serious injuries to bikes or bodies, but lots of road rash.
And all kinds of dumb drama from that. Riders mad at me for "taking them on a dangerous ride", riders mad at the girl for not having her equipment in check, and other riders defending her choices ("Stop blaming the victim!"). A couple of those dudes called an ambulance (?!), and stayed behind with her.
The rest of the ride continued as planned, to a chill meadow spot, where we had an evening campfire & beers.
Pic related: Taken on the day before, when I rode the route in advance, it shows the typical road surface (and width)--does not show the 'trench'.
