>>1348385I'm a GS-5 Step 1 right now. In about 3 years, provided I don't fuck up, I will be a GS-9 Step 1. So about 30k a year and in a few around 45k.
Not bad and super good when you consider the benefits package.

Don't forget, humans are a native NA species, we have been here for >10,000years. Native Americans burned huge swaths of land on purpose and by accident. So much so that eastern forests evolved fire dependent species despite the fact that lighting sourced fire was insignificant due to the climate.
We don't burn at the same frequency and intensity as the native american did. Clearcuts are about as close as we can economically come in areas that regenerate in an even aged structure.
Really it all comes down to different tree shade tolerances. Most upland oaks need full sun to successfully regenerate, a clearcut is the best solution. Sugar Maple on the otherhand needs partial sun so small group selections are a good way to regenerate Sugar Maple.
There is also the issue that there is too much old growth in NA right now. I mean Silvicultural old growth, it is actually a really specific term that is kinda difficult to explain without giving you a silviculture class. Best way to put it is that there are some stands that are 200 years old that aren't old growth and there are stands 50 years old that are very much old growth. Basically, there are a lot of animals in NA that are having a hard time because there are too few naturally regenerating even aged stands.
