I can't imagine he rode on much rough terrain, but roads must've still been rough. more power to him for enduring that.

My great grandfather and grandfather were train drivers in Germany. Grandfather was still starting out on steam ones in the 50s

I've had 4 generations of my family work on Usui Pass in Japan from when they used to run steam rackway until it closed.
Hell my grandpa still walks that route talking to tourists about what it used to be like when he used to be drive helper locos. My uncle also worked there until it closed and now works out of Niigata now.
Pic related is what my great great grandpa probably drove I think? I know they used these until the late 40s.

My great grandfather was in the Navy before and after WW2. And I had a distant relative who worked baggage at JFK for Pan Am.

My father currently drives trains and my grandfather, his father, was a machinist in a locomotive shop.
In fact my dad is doing yard switching as I type this.

My father worked as a sailor on a greek oil tanker in the 1960s, later when he lived in Germany he worked as a truck driver for some time. My uncle worked at the airport cleaning planes, he always brought us stuff people had lost as gifts.
