What's the most climate-friendly way to cross the Atlantic?

Cunard do seven-night liner crossings between NY and Southampton; how's this compare with your average JFK->Heathrow flight?

I know it's a 'shortest dwarf' thing, I'm just curious.

Freight ships. They are driving anyways and your weight is not going to make any difference in terms of fuel consumption anyways.

You can book such trips through specialiyed agencies, but they are hellishly expensive.

It's not a cruise ship, because it's not the destination itself, it's basically a ginormous ferry. Cunard themselves describe their Atlantic fleet as 'ocean liners'.

Cruise ships can't sail on the high seas, they're not stable enough. They're meant for just bordering land where the seas are calmer. The Queen Mary II is afaik the only large commercial passenger vessel that can easily cross the atlantic, and it had to be specially designed for it. From there on it really isn't a cruise ship, not even a tomayto-tomahto sort of thing.
Of course it has all or most of the amenities that you'd expect on a cruise ship, but that's not what really defines a cruise ship. Back in the day, ocean liners also had many amenities, after all those were trips of several days or even weeks. The difference between a cruise ship and an ocean liner lies more in its seaworthiness I'd say.

Roughly speaking there are 2 factors for fuel burn that relate to 2 stages of flight. Weight impacts the fuel required to get to cruise altitude and cross sectional area relates to cruise burn.

Modern twinjets are basically the peak of both of these. Low weight and relatively small area compared to their passenger capacity.

When cruise lines reposition ships they often have to sail them across the ocean, and normally they carry passengers when they do so

No, the sole purpose of the passenger plane is to carry those passengers across the Atlantic. If not enough people were flying, the route would be cancelled.

The freight ship however gets its revenue from the containers. Prices start at 400 $ for a container from the US to Germany, times 8000 containers on a ship will give the company a lot of money. Getting another 10000$ by carrying a handfull of passengers along is nice, but by far no reason to sail without freight.

The passenger is not the freight the ship is setting sails for, he is just a small side revenue. As stated above, earning 320000$ with containers is the purpose of the ship. Gaining another few thousand dollars by carrying some passengers along is nice, but without the passengers the ship would still sail and carry the containers.

A passenger plane on the other hand carrying 250 people for 500$ each across the Atlantic has no other business to justify the travel than carrying these passengers. Carrying some freight along is nice, but no reason for it to start without passengers.

Going vegetarian, riding a bike, hitching a ride on a freight ship all while massive cargoships and big rigs, factories etc. pollute for free unconstrained doing far more damage than he could ever mitigate. He basically wants to waste his time falling for the old tricks companies use to saddle blame for co2 on the consumer.

The answer OP, is simple. Sailing. Vote for a politicians that support outlawing planes, large ships, and other pointless pollution. Globalization will come to an end, we are living in a bubble that will not last forever. Though they may build some really cool tunnels or floating bridges.

There's a distinct lack of numbers in this thread so I tried to estimate your question.

The Queen Mary 2 burns 261 tons of heavy fuel oil and 237 tons of marine gas oil daily while underway. It has a capacity of 2620 passengers on a 7-day, 5503km trip from Southampton to New York. Running all those conversions through my possibly dodgy math, the QM2 achieves 5.25 passenger-kilometers per liter of fuel burned. Meanwhile, according to the International Council on Clean Transportation, the cleanest Transatlantic airline in 2014 was Norwegian, flying at 40 passenger-kilometers per liter. The dirtiest airlines were only 50% worse, so still considerably more efficient than the QM2.

So unless I really fucked something up, it does seem like the most climate-friendly way to practically cross the Atlantic is via budget airline on a fuel-efficient twinjet, unless you own a sailboat fitted for transoceanic voyages and are sufficiently skilled.

Ships burn bunker fuel and without emission equipment. So their NOx, SOx, and particulate emissions are terrible. The energy required for that floating hotel is nothing to sneeze at either.

They certainly can cross oceans. And having relatives who've booked passages on those repositioning cruises, they verify that it's usually a bit more rougher than the normal seasonal routes. Even though most modern ships have stabilizers to help ease the rolling.

You could mount solar panels on top and generate all or part of the energy needed for propulsion. If people were actually serious about pollution (which they obv aren't as it's all just empty virtue signalling) this idea could have a future. Shame that also the idea of hydrogen airships was tarnished due to the Hindenburg crashing because of SABOTAGE.
