This might sound counter-intuitive, but this confuses the fuck out of dogs (at least in my area), and then, if dog doesn't fuck off, you can safely use front wheel (since bikes are typically front-wheel light) and use all your body weight to cause pain.
Shit is very rare, they usually fuck off once you stop. I had to do it only twice in my life. Pipe wrench would be a better option, but first time I didn't had it, and second time, I had no time taking it out of bag.
