>>1361661>Wrong, you have less rangeSometimes you need not range, but amount of steps.
Sure derailleur has more gears and smaller steps, but... Most of those gearing would wear chain (and cause inefficiency on the way) and only like 7 gears are usable for any prolonged amount of time, while difference in gear ratio is greater, which means you would have higher gear steps, which is not good.
>By half a secondYes, half a second is a big deal. Derailleur system shifts about in 1/2 of a second, even close gears. Planetary gear set shifts in matter of milliseconds.
>Explain to me why 99% of $2000+ bikes don't use hub gearing or coaster brakes. A conspiracy? For professional racers, every gram and every milliwatt wasted on friction matters. I bet they also use thin oil in bearings instead of grease. Sure, derailleurs are more efficient, since they don't add parts.
Meanwhile, typical /n/ user won't notice a fuck. 92% efficiency, 98% efficiency. Yet ability to shift while stationary, more gears in range you actually need (not some ridiculously low/high gears ), fast and reliable shifting matter.
Also, with planetary gear-set automatic shifting is possible.
