hey everyone does anyone here have any bike touring tips for a beginner?

I am a road cyclist with optimum health I average about 50 miles for my own rides. But now I want to take an adventure ride for a couple of days. I'm most concerned with my lack of basic camping knowledge. How to pack light and must essentials I must bring with me other than shelter and water.

I want to pack light as I enjoy riding a lot of miles already, but I also want to enjoy the ride and not let it be about how many miles a day i do. I originally wanted to do NY to Pittsburgh which is about 500 miles, but I think that is a big task for a beginner.

So instead I want to tackle something like NY to Philly and then perhaps Philly to DC if i enjoy it.

Any fellow bikepacking or tour heads in here?

One set of clothes for cycling, one for the night.
Plus one for going into town if you plan on doing that. Clothes should include an outer layer that allows you to stay dry even in hours-long rain, and a warm layer that lets you sit still around the camp at night without freezing.
Get the lightest sleeping bag you can, that'll be enough for close to freezing if you wear your warm layer at night when needed.
I prefer a tent over a tarp for mosquito protection, wind protection and privacy. And an inflatable sleeping mat.
For toiletries, a toothbrush, small amount of toothpaste, and some soap (which you can use to wash yourself and your clothes). Bring a small microfiber towel. Meds depending on your needs, plus something against diarrhea and some chamois cream can save your trip.
Don't forget basic first aid.
Bear spray if bears are an issue where you are.
Set of shoes you can walk in.
Decide if you want to bring a stove, fuel and a pot or rely on restaurants and cold food. You'll need a pocket knife, but a small folder is enough. Don't listen to survivalists.
Obviously tools to fix flats, adjust brakes, deal with other issues and 1-2 spare tubes. Wrap some duct tape around a bic lighter, that way you have it on hand and don't need to bring the whole roll. Some zip ties, maybe some WD40 and a bike multitool with allen keys and a chain breaker.
Biggest time saver by far is a handlebar-mounted GPS, a way to charge it and a pre-planned route.

This is only a good idea if you plan to just camp in legit campgrounds with smooth lawns, or you really need the R value because of snow on the ground. If you're going to freecamp with it then your expensive inflatable mat is verry likely to get fucked by a sharp thing in the ground.

i plan on buying a new Jamis Renegade

my budget is 1,000 dollars for the bike although I wouldn't mind buying something in the 700 range and using those spare 300 for the trip necessities such as a solo tent, rail for the bike etc

the bike is steel and weighs 25lbd (pounds) i dont want to haul more than 8 pounds of bags and gear to be honest as you mentioned...

hills will be painful

They are amazing when they're working though. I'm gonna get another but save it for special occasions.

I don't know why but i got the vagrant vibe from op. If you're sleeping in wierd bushes and stuff then they are too at risk imo and the extra pack time is annoying too. Probably might want to consider a bivvy too.

That'll be hard to achieve. And do keep in mind that your system weight would be around 180 pounds (including yourself). So adding a few more pounds for things you actually need won't make that much of a difference.
Especially since you'll be carrying around 5-10 pounds in food and water (depending on weather and resupply points) as well.

that's just carrying the fuel inside the food packages. Plus a lot of water that's already in the food and has to be carried all the way instead of adding it later to dry food. A light pop can stove weighs an ounce. MREs are heavy.

I am a lightweight rider at 132lbs

i specialize in climbing on my roadbiking and i have some juice on flats

this is not about riding quick and fast as much as I am used to that. I just want to get to Philly and back to NYC. if I enjoy the ride to philly I may ride to DC and that's when I will need a tent and supplies etc.

You won't have any problem. The only thing that gets you into bike touring shape is bike touring. Also if your already used to biking 50 miles, you can definitely tour pretty decently already. Slow and steady is bike touring pace.

As far as a bike goes, I used a long haul trucker for a 1000 mile bike tour. I would definitely choose something lighter. 90s mtb frames work well when your on a budget, and there's several modern steel bikes you can choose from as well. Just make sure it's comfy.

I brought a two person tent, bike shoes and sandals, camel back, 2 water bottles, minimal clothing, rain gear, puffy jacket, stove, repair kit, and probably quite a bit of other stuff I can't recall. Basically learn how to make some basic meals and camp for a day or two. You won't ever be very far from civilization, so it's more about comfort then survival. Also look up the website/app warm showers. Literally the best thing for bike tourists.

Couple other things, if you plan on doing this solo, learn to talk to strangers. It can get pretty lonely. Bars and hostels are your friend. Also, why not go north, through Vermont and to Montreal? This has some fantastic biking and Montreal is a great city.

Sport-touring bikes are good though. Faster and more fun to ride unloaded. For shorter ultralight rides, near his home base, considering he's a roadie, i definitely wouldn't suggest a full blown touring bike.

Unless he has aspirations to do longer tours elsewhere.

Dude don't buy Jamis. They have notoriously loose seat tubes and issues with slipping seatposts.
If you search on the internet for seatpost slip, like 40% of the cases will be Jamis, which makes them massively overrepresented considering how many brands there are out there.
I've seen a post on Reddit from a guy claiming to be a mechanic and confirming that it's a common issue with them - he could be lying but I don't see a reason why he would. I myself had a Dragonslayer which was supposed to take 31.6 seatpost. Those kept slipping so as warranty service (which is also a joke with Jamis) they put in a 31.8 seatpost. WHICH WOULD STILL SLIP. The only way I managed to hold it in place was a 2-bolt downhill clamp that grabs both the seattube and the seatpost. I feel like the upper part of the clamp is the only thing that keeps it from slipping down. I can't give you English results but on my local bike forum there were at least 3 people with the same issue.

Jamis email support just started ignoring me once I started asking if this isn't a frame issue that someone should look at. I ended up selling the bike as defective, since even if I managed to get the frame replaced, the difference in price I could get wasn't worth the nerves and time, and I was going to get rid of it anyway because it had other issues I hated about it.
I was considering raising a stink at MTBR, but they require you to post for like a month before you can make a new thread, so all you get is an anonymous warning here. Do not buy Jamis.

Every year there are 10 or so dummies like you who get it in their head that something like this is relatively trivial or something and that they can just go for days and days on end all by themselves and nothing bad could possibly happen. They, and you, are wrong.
You need to *actually* be in good shape, not LARPing that you are. You need go *with a group* that is properly supported by some organization or group of people who monitor your progress, make sure you have places to stay overnight so you can shower and wash kit, handle problems, and so on. Otherwise you're asking for trouble.

You're right to look for something sportier than a full blown touring bike.
The bike you're looking at is overgeared though.

50/34 and 11-34 is basically road gearing.
A subcompact crank, like 46-30, is better.
You can swap it later but when looking at bikes, i'd look for something with one stock.

The other thing that's pretty big is tyre choice. Don't run heavy slow touring tyres. You didn't answer my question about bikepacking vs panniers either. That's significant aero difference. But severely limits your capacity. If you do want to go bikepacking bags, make sure you buy a bike with dual midfork bosses to run an oversized cage there.

And rest the most comfortable you can. You can always get more food as you go along.
One item I take on every backpacking, bike packing and even car camping trip now is an inflatable, solar charging led lantern. Super useful, weighs fuckall and can be had for all of like, $10.
Otherwise, just pace yourself and get to where you're going. It's not a race, you're on vacation.

46x11 is basically the same gear as 50x12
and it's taller than 53x13

Even on the flat, aero losses from your bags and rolling resistance from your tyres will slow you down so much that spinning that 46x11 top gear will be harder than spinning the top gear on your road bike.

And once you hit your first big hill on a loaded bike you will WISH you had lower gears.

How do people install front/back panniers on their road bikes?
Usually they do not have the mounts for any further upgrades, meaning it's all DIY solutions?

Only solely because of this fact am I considering to buy an overpriced gravel bike, because they have all the mounts ready.

Jamis seems like a shit-show internally if you read the reviews on glassdoor. I do think their Coda bikes are cool but for OP I would recommend a Fuji Jari for sport touring mostly because they look cool and are affordable. There's also that cheap new Salsa bike they're selling at REI ... firewood... woodfire... warwood... some shit

People pack their fears. You don't need anything beyond suncream, glasses, insulation, rain protection and sleeping mat, plus some navigation gear and water.

Not him, but it only took me a month to get into shape enough to do 80 miles in a day. And that was on a cheap mountain bike (pic related) I slapped road tires on. It takes a lot of work, but it's not unheard of.

Yeah. I was really into bike packing for a while, and even small custom bags are like $50/each, so I figured it would be better to just make them myself. These are all cordura, because I wanted them durable, but I could definitely make something lighter.

My advice OP, is to decide whether you want to do camping or credit card touring. It could decide what bike you lean toward - sport vs more traditional. I did a month-long with my wife for my honeymoon in Europe and we brought an oversize hammock + kit along and didn't use it more than 3 times. There were a lot of fun small towns to stay in and we didn't test our hammock out to find out it was too small.

Anyway, hotels there are cheaper compared to USA and you might be into camping more. Look at tour blogs or the stuff here and decide what things are essential for your trips.

Despite what these faggots say, you don't need to be in pinnacle shape to go on a tour. If you ride at a good pace, I've cleared 100±10 miles on a guys trip. Otherwise, you just adjust your pacing, my wife and I ramped from 50 mi/day to about 70. Buy a bike. Put rear panniers on (fronts are overrated) and go for a loaded ride before you treck out.
